Could I use any chain for a Kids bike, its a basic single speed, has a max of 36/37 links.

could i use a chain and break it up to fit, or would I need a specific type of chain.

Chains normally come too long, and you break to fit. I doubth they make different sized cogs for kids bike, so I'd just buy a single speed chain and break appropriately.

Chains from a road bike might be a too narrow for the sprockets, not sure if spacing is an issue. At a guess another single speed or 7 speed chain would probably be ok, but not a 10 or 11 speed chain.
