Someone I know died today after being in ICU for weeks. He should have had many good years ( decades) in front of him. Terribly sad

Sorry to hear of your and his familys loss during this time. TLC yourself and your friends over the next while and maybe you could help his family organise a memorial for him when the time is right.

Be interesting to see the daily HSE update later on. CMO said 44 in ICU as of 8am this morning. Hopefully a further decrease.

At least 25 imported cases of the coronavirus have been detected in Spain over the past month
Valencia’s Regional Health Councillor Ana Barcelo said two people who tested positive after travelling from the United States had likely not complied with a mandatory two-week quarantine upon arrival.

South Korea closes schools again over 79 new cases in a distribution center. One student had a mother working in the center.

And we think we're doing good with excuses made, the virus isn't out there.

Let's pretend the distribution center is a meat factory here. What if mammy or daddy works in a meat factory and we have groups of young people meeting up.

Sad to think how much of a waste the whole lockdown was for countries such as Italy and Spain which are inviting tourists back soon, they will be exactly back to square one by July . I am not saying we will definitely have a second wave or that it can't be avoided but without mandatory quarantine of foreigners a second wave absolutely is unavoidable when you have countries like Brazil and Mexico where there is probably literally millions of active infections right now and will be for many months more. 25 cases in Spain already imported before they've even officially opened to tourists is a lot.

I hope that Ireland does not waste our lockdown by simply reopening the border without quarantine. We have already damaged our economy badly because of lockdown, we may at the very least prevent a large COVID outbreak then while we are at it.

If we are making up scenarios... Why stop there? Maybe they have 10 children, in 10.different schools... And maybe both parents work in separate meat factories... And maybe... And maybe...

Yes we have to be cautious, we all understand thank you very much.

Constantly putting up negative and dramatic posts is getting just a bit boring.

We're hopefully coming through the worst of one of the worst events in living memory.

Maybe just tone down the drama a small bit?

They are only closing 200 schools in a certain area and postponing the opening of another 120 odd that were to reopen this week.
The other 20000 odd schools across the country are to remain open

Have you read up on this at all ??

It's a cluster of cases linked to a distribution centre where an employee was forced to go into work while sick. They're being cautious for the next 2 weeks and most restrictions are only in Seoul with only some places closing. All employees at the distribution centre and their contacts are being traced and tested. It's purely precaution. Not all schools had even been reopened yet.

55 new cases today and 177 over 3 days in a population of over 50 milion. Read past the headline, you seem to see the worst in everything. Theres alot of what if in your post. If your concerned about the virus being out there then dont go out but its not a healthy mindset to have, that of suspicion

What's your point?? You posted about Korea, the amount of cases there in the last few days are the equivalent here of a handful of cases.

158 here is extremely low, you'd swear if you walk out the door you'll get it.

If there is anything that epitomizes the state of modern media - Just google "South Korea schools".

Every headline is some version of "South Korea closes schools". You have to dive into the article to actually find out, its a tiny percentage of schools related to the cluster found in a distribution plant.

    Clickbait rubbish.

And the worst part is so many believe it.

Interesting that they rarely have overdramtic headlines about positive news.

There's definitely an element in the media, here and worldwide, keen on keeping this going.

    RTE being a great example.

    Hey Lukebandit my old pal.

Must be worrying you now that the lockdown is being eased.

The virus is on the retreat.

I'm not sure if it's so much about bad news, but news in general and a general dumbing-down to reach more of an audience. People will be interested to know more about a dramatic headline like "South Korea closes schools" than to get behind the reports.

I also suspect the general standard of journalist is, to put it mildly, terrible. The scientific literacy seems pretty poor throughout this.

Similarly we should expect to hear headlines in the coming weeks about "Vaccine failures". Most vaccines fail in testing, that's why we have a 100+ being tested for Covid to ensure some make it - but it will be a headline, and it will be intended to generate clicks and views.

The virus has the same effect as Donald Trump. People click articles and watch the news everything something happens in relation to both. Deep down all the journalists who despise both know that once they're gone there's a void there that'll be tough to fill. It's just make morbid depressing hay while the sun shines.

    second result headline:
South Korea schools: Hundreds close again after reopening ...

    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/29/asia/south-korea-coronavirus-shuts-down-again-intl/index.html

More than 500 schools closed again Friday to students after briefly reopening, as South Korea moves to stamp out a resurgence of the coronavirus in the capital, Seoul, and its surrounding metropolitan area.

Parks, art galleries, museums and theaters operated by the government in the Seoul metropolitan area -- home to about half the country's population of nearly 52 million -- have also been closed to the public for the next two weeks.

This is 100% true and very worrying and concerning given the world we live in at the moment needs accurate, given so much crap is spread on social media.

Unfortunately what passes as journalism is nearly as bad.

Does anyone here know how a suspected case in hospital is defined? Is it someone with symptoms or is it anyone who has gotten a swab taken? Because there's quite a high proportion of hospitalised suspected cases.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,483 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

It's impossible to be drawing conclusions at this stage about who has or hasn't done a great job in protecting the elderly.

We don't know how countries compare to each to other in terms of how they register deaths from covid. We've recorded all deaths in all settings from the very beginning, other countries started later and some still don't record deaths outside of hospital settings. So direct comparison is very difficult, if not impossible.

So what are you worried about South Korea for then ?? Your post was about them closing things and now your saying it's a handful of cases which it is.

158 in 3 days here compared to where we were 3 or 4 weeks ago is tiny and it's still declining.

I honestly dont see what your getting at here.
