    A cautionary tale from Spain.

"A single birthday party has been linked to a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in a Spanish town, with every single person who attended the party having become infected with the virus.

A birthday party held in Lleida, Catalonia, resulted in all 20 people who attended becoming infected, the Telegraph newspaper reported, prompting Spanish health authorities to postpone the region's schedule for easing the lockdown.

The Lleida area subsequently saw the number of new cases rise from 45 between May 7 and May 13, to 142 between May 14 and 21."

Always going to be the way, it has started with 1 case everywhere it's been .....there was 1 case in Wuhan, 1 here in little ol Ireland ...........we either learn to live with it accept the risk (and the consequences) or live in fear for eternity

And learn to die with it.

Or just be cautious going forward and avoid crowds and people and keep social distancing measures. Hopefully there will be treatments available from the medical professionals as time goes on and hopefully a vaccine will come through too.

Or run around screaming like a headless chicken like you. What do you plan on doing if a vaccine is years off or never gets developed?

Where do you get this 'fear for eternity' from ?

The new trumpian/bolsonaroesque narrative seem to be that anyone who takes sensible precautions is a shrinking violet, always quaking in their boots, while the 'hard men' who don't give a f*ck about anyone or anything are somehow correct in taking moronic chances of spreading the virus.

The longer this bloody virus can be kept at bay, the better the chances of effective therapy. For instance... the initial patients admitted to ICU had a 20% chance of survival (or less). Now there is a 60%+ chance of surviving ICU simply because of better treatment, as physicians and anesthetists gain more experience and understanding of the disease.

It is almost as if they want the disease to spread... as a last gasp for their immoral and failed 'herd immunity' tactic.

At least the deaths are down, and even the anticipated rise in cases is at the lower end of what had been feared.

Usual Sunday caution with deaths but is 66 cases not high?

No, 9th consecutive day under 100.

If it reflects the impact of Phase One, then possibly not.

It totally depends where the cases are, the numbers are meaningless without that context. Even if it was 1000 new cases if it was confined to hospitals and nursing homes and factories it would not be a major cause for concern as all of the new cases are isolated and quarantined and of no risk to further spread within the greater community

Excellent news... that and Sligo going 2 weeks without a case.

Just shows that if this virus can be eliminated from a county, it can be eliminated from the island as a whole too.

Great to see the ICU numbers dropping all the time and case numbers at a steady low

Just so ye know there was a lot of hospital confirmed cases in the HSE report yesterday. Usually about 8/9 but was 17 yesterday afaik.

Portugal where masks are mandatory on public transport and in shops?

Steady rise over the last week, with Lisbon being the main area where cases are being found.
The next phase of their easing of restrictions might not go ahead unfortunately if it continues to increase.

Bit of a disappointment for personal reasons, but hopefully they will get a handle on things and their deaths remain low.

One additional death in the 25-34 age group

By my count the new confirmed cases this week for the ROI was 351 and deaths 52. In comparison, last week we had 527 cases and 62 deaths.

1 death denotified so increase of 1 death to our total today. 5 positive tests also removed so increase of 61 cases to our total.

Superb numbers to end a really positive week.

A few days ago, it was 30 something cases. Yesterday, it was 59 cases, today it's 66. It's going back up again. And with people ignoring restrictions, it's just going one way.

I was in town earlier on and there was so much groups of people all over the place. You'd swear there wasn't a virus out there. That's not good at all.

Where do you get this info? I notice RTE never correct it.

It's very steady. The day with the 30 odd cases was only a 13 hour reporting period, taking into account the additional cases notified the following day it's very steady around the 60 mark.

Overall trend is continually downwards so to say it's going back up again is incorrect, your looking at daily numbers and not taking into account the overall trend.

Hospital and ICU numbers all trending downwards too.

It's not the doom and gloom picture you paint. Good to hear people are getting on with their lives as best as possible

David Higgins has now added a new column showing how long each county has gone without a case:

I know I’m probably going to be accused of putting a ‘bad spin’ on the numbers, but today’s figure of 66 is the total number of positive tests yesterday. The 5 denotifications are from earlier days (I don’t think they give a breakdown by day of those).

So while the overall number of positive cases increased by 61, the actual number of new cases yesterday is correct at 66 (assuming no error noted at a later date before someone says it!)

And how are you placed to judge the CMOs performance?
