    Hi

I have look at numerous YouTube videos, which suggest the shrub root balls top should be level with the top of the soil and not covered when sowing. Is mulch then added to cover the rootball and just not touch the plant stem?

    Thx

    That's about it.

Dig a hole somewhat bigger than the pot size and put some compost and soil in the bottom, mixed around (this persuades the roots to leave the rootball and explore further). Drop the plant out of the pot onto your hand and look at the rootball.

If it is softish with just a few roots showing tease a few ends out, put it in the hole, check that the top of the compost is level with ground surface and backfill with a soil and compost mix.

If it is a mass of pot shaped roots then scrape at the outer layer of roots till you have some roots loose - in an extreme case I just use a corner of the trowel and rip through the roots on the sides and bottom till the surface looks a bit more 'furry' :D You will not harm the plant if it is as well grown as that, and if you don't loosen them there is a good chance it will never put new growth in the soil, and will not do well.

Edit - make sure it is well soaked before taking it out of the pot and water during and after planting, and at least a few times while it is getting established, depending on weather.
