    This race is 10/10 hilarity!

    Long live rain pissing over half of a track on and off and playing mind games with 27 drivers and pit crews who don't have a clue what tyres to put on their cars

  • Posts: 25,611 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Ah let them race another half a lap or something.

    That car control on slicks into turn 1 was feckin ridiculous.

    This is madness altogether

    Pato doing a mega job although he'll be chewed up at the restart.

    I'd love to know how he even got into the wall like that, broadcast seemed to miss it and any bonus replays were on the post-race that Sky decided in their infinite wisdom weren't worth showing live instead of what was probably the 43rd repeat of the Miami highlights.

    Considering he was challenging for a top-five at the time, I don't think it's a case of him not being good anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    Have to agree on JPM , for a one off drive on the road circuit he was within a second of the top drivers during quali and was on for a top six.

    Appalling coverage from Sky again , the post race interviews would have been a great listen and as for Sky's commentator, Tom Gaynor, he brings nothing to the coverage.

    At the end of the race we saw llundbergs car with heavy damage ,it was a result of a collision with illot with a few drivers commentating on vision issues from the cockpit.

    Overall a crazy rave - too many full course yellows when a local might have sufficed.

    It was an insane race. It looked like Patio early doors, the Ericsson looked in prime position, then Hertha I think, then Rossi, then McLaughlin.

    Hertha is so aggressive and so talented.

    Sato miles ahead of everyone in first practice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    I wouldn't read too much after one day of running - a lot of teams working through their own specific test programs.

    Sati was near the bottom of the times until happy hour - Ganassi as a team had a good day.

    Weather forecast is not so good for today's running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Only reason I mentioned it is that his time was less than two mph off last year's pole winner so not much work needed on that car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    True but the time Sato set was a 'with tow' time so it can't be compared to pole times.

    Additionally the cars are still running at reduced power - Fast Friday is when the boost gets turned up.

    Favourite stat so far - Jimmy Johnson has completed more 500 mile races then the rest of the field combined !

    Getting excited about the race !

    Saturday schedule has been adjusted as the forecast for tomorrow isn't that great, so this is being made to try ensure that all cars can get in at least their one guaranteed run.

    • 1:30pm — Practice 6 (60 minutes) {streaming only}
    • 4pm — Day 1 Qualifications (6 hours, 50 minutes) {streaming; Sky F1 from 6:05pm only}

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Sato top of the charts all week. Delighted to see Rossi up there. Hopefully he qualifies well.

    Has tv coverage been delayed

    Chequered Flag has flown , what a mixed up day , Veekay fastest , Sato a very lucky boy just scrapping the fast 12 after his utterly stupid move of staying in the fast lane after qualifying and impeding Marco Andretti. The book should have been thrown at him and his response to the incident was beyond clueless.

    Great day for ECR /Ganassi and McLaren, disaster for Andretti and Penske bar for Grosjean and Power.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    Deserved pole for Scott Dixon , 2nd fastest ever qualifying speed at Indy and now just one indy pole behind the legendary Rick Mears.

    Alex Palou second ahead of pre run favourites Vinius Reekay and Ed Carpenter.

    The top 6 completed by Marcus Ericsson and Tony Kanann.

    Ganassi Hondas have been strong all through practice and quali so must start as pre race favourites with Dixie or Palou heading the field.

    ROUND 6 — INDY 500 RACE WEEK

    Monday 23th May

    • 6pm — Practice 8 {streaming only}

    Friday 27th May

    • 4pm — Carb Day Final Practice {streaming; tape-delay on Sky Sports F1 from 6:15pm}
    • 7:30pm — Pit stop competition {streaming only}

    Sunday 29th May

    • 4pm — 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 {Sky Sports Action}
      • 5:45pm — Green flag

    Do take note that we're being moved to Action for this year's race, since SSF1 is taking the blitheringly stupid decision to prioritise F1 chequered flag, Ted Kravitz, some filler crap, and the Monaco highlights; and are only joining the 500 from 7pm.

    This year's coverage is being hosted by Tom Gaymor, former IndyCar driver and 2017 Indy 500 most laps led Max Chilton, and COO and founder of The Race Andrew van de Burgt. Programming is seemingly being fronted by a 15-minute pre-race piece at 3:45pm before the NBC broadcast commences at 4pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    The amazing thing about this race is that certain drivers can come through the field.

    It's hard to see past Dixon with what he did in qualifying but guys like Pagenaud, Rossi and Castroneves can never be ruled out no matter how far back they start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

    Just watched Dixon's 4 laps, that was sensational to watch!

    2nd fastest 4 lap average of all time at Indy since Luyendyk ripped it up in 1996, fastest pole laps in any Indycar racing since De Ferran hit 241mph two-lap average at Fontana back in 2000, what Dixon pulled off after all these years is a very special achievement and only cements his legacy further. I didn't think with this aeroscreen we would see 234mph speeds anytime soon, 235 has to be possible next year

    "Is that a big moment for Colton Herta?" 😅

    Glad he's alright, hopefully the car isn't too badly damaged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Glad to hear he's okay. Crazy on this track doesn't work. I realise they're all crazy driving at those speeds 😁 but taking chances is insane.

    He'll need a new car for tomorrow, does that put him at the back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,774 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    Herta retains his starting position - a change to the previous rules ,unlucky to have got air borne but thankfully uninjured .

    It's hard to see past Dixon based on times but this race is never that easy so my three picks are Veekay, Sato and McLaughlin.

    Pagenaud is exceptional here, it'll be interesting to see if he can get competitive early.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

    Dixon is long overdue a 2nd Indy 500 win following his only win in 2008 but then only one pole sitter has won the race in the past 10 years. Ganassi's five cars will be overwhelming favourites to win today, I will go for Palou to win today but I wouldn't rule that Jimmie Johnson guy out

    I think everyone wants to see Helio pull off a record 5th Indy 500 win it but he wasn't looked particularly quick this month so not holding out hold much hope

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Yeah, it's a crazy race. A pit stop at the right or wrong time can change your day dramatically.

    Have to agree as regards Jimmy Johnson, he's looked real good the past week. I'd love to see him win it but I don't think he will.

  • Posts: 25,611 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Veekay might not be the best in the world or anything but he's entertaining at Indy. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Palou goes past Dixon, strategy move I think. They'll switch ever 12 or so laps to protect fuel consumption. Veekay might upset that though.

    Not too familiar with IndyCar, do they all use the same chassis and a few different engine manufactures or what differences are there between the cars?

  • Posts: 25,611 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Same chassis different engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

    Same chassis from Dallara, same tires Firestone but two different engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda

    Biggest difference between the cars will be the engineering levels from the particular teams. Ganassi and Penske are the powerhouses, Andretti, Arrow McLaren SP, Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan then would be the 3 in the next tier of teams and so on

    Poor Veekay, just got a bit loose, no chance of saving it at those speeds. Need somebody else to come now and attack the Chip Ganassi dominance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    O'Ward flying, Sato flying, further back McLaughlin is up 9 spots to 17th. Needs luck to get into it but he has a serious car.

  • Posts: 25,611 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    They need to add a 10 second delay before sending vehicles out, cars are still going at high speed and the accident almost still unfolding and they're sending pick-ups onto the apron.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Here we go, the start of it. Dixon lucky to get out ahead of the yellow but Palou enters after it so has to go back out and he's way back now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    And now Palou has to make an emergency stop because he has no fuel left so going right to the back now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,790 ✭✭✭✭Burkie1203

  • Posts: 25,611 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Aye, he's stayed on the lead lap at least.

    O'Ward sitting nicely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,460 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    McLaughlin 12th, Helio 14th, two to watch.
