So... what does Ireland hope to get out of it? Last time I remember us having a seat was just before the 2003 Iraq war.

Surely in the interest of Fairness it'd be Dion v Enya?

With Enya overpowering her with a flow of river puns?

The last time we got it was in 2001. I hope it isn't as eventful as that stint was. But this is 2020 and given the way things have gone so far . . . jaysus.

When most of us say "social justice" we mean equality under the law opposition to prejudice, discrimination and equal opportunities for all. When Social Justice Activists say "social justice" they mean an emphasis on group identity over the rights of the individual, a rejection of social liberalism, and the assumption that unequal outcomes are always evidence of structural inequalities.

China apparently were pushing states they have the thumb over to vote for Ireland over Canada. Their relations with Canada are sour to say the least at the moment.

The other nations that were elected: Mexico, India (both elected unopposed and not exactly China friendly) and Norway (NATO member and only just out of the Chinese diplomacy doghouse) meant we had a powerful benefactor in the back-channels.

Probably has more to do with it than Bono's renditions of One and slick Simon of Iveagh House all truth be told.
