CNN had reporting that while he was refusing to mobilise the security response he was calling senators inside trying to lean on them to use the rioting to derai the vote, I wonder will we ever get to see the bottom in the question "how much lower can he go?"

"People say ‘go with the flow’ but do you know what goes with the flow? Dead fish."

It says a lot about your view of the world when someone questioning whether there is police bias is automatically right wing.

Police taking photos with insurrectionists, Police being told to behave entirely differently with insurrectionists that are committing acts of terrorism. Police only months ago behaving as militarised units even against peaceful protesters, beating old men and running over protesters. Police then being less armed and more relaxed than ever for violent militias taking over government buildings. Multiple resignations in the Police and government as a result.

Seems reasonable to conclude and the President elect thought it was worth commenting on too btw.

So serious that someone got shot in the neck and killed, justifiably so. Not buying the police bias on this one, the issue in the beginning was that police were outnumbered, and you know why that was. Yet the narrative is that they willingly let them in, not sure how a handful of police are expected to stop thousands of people.

I toured the Capitol building about 10 years ago and it’s not a building you just walk into. I had to sign up ahead of time and on the day of visit itself, had to go through many checkpoints, searches, metal detectors etc. Not one or two, it was a lot. Also they don’t allow tours when Congress is in session.

The Capital police carry guns so why didn’t they use them before the crowd gained access to the building? Either they are complicit or badly neglected their duty, no matter how out numbered they were.

7 years back they wouldn’t let me in, Library of Congress beside it did allow people in but security was strict, was told by I presume plainclothed Ss officer to move along when taking photo outside White House, same for federal reserve nearby

The whole area around mall probably has highest concentration in world of security yet these rioters just walked in.

Yeah I believe you need to sign up ahead of time and I had signed up through the office of my local congressman Jim Himes whose intern gave us the tour. I also did the White House tour during Clinton’s time and a second time in 2011 when I was a parent chaperone on my son’s school visit there. Much more security he second time round there.

I know the defence of the trump crowd has been that they didn’t hurt anyone, which isn’t true because their actions directly or indirectly caused five people to die and many more were injured. I think it was this thread or the election thread where there was the picture of the guy with the cable ties(which apparently are used by police as handcuffs) and the “Murder the media” writing is seen on a video on an outside door with cable ties around the door handle. I mean if you weren’t trying to hurt anyone why would you be trying to cable tie doors shut ?

I didnt think they would try to impeach him but if they do he cant run again in 4 years so I think they will

I think they will do anything they can to discredit him and his legacy politically as much as possible. Sure, he'd do the very same if the shoe was on the other foot but that would be unlikely as it's hard to imagine another President as stupid and egotistical

Police have announced that a pickup truck with guns and bombs has been found nearby

    https://nbc-2.com/news/national-world/2021/01/08/police-found-a-pickup-truck-full-of-bombs-and-guns-near-capitol-feds-say/
That guy was found and arrested. He actually approached police to say his car was stuck inside their perimeter and when questioned about the car, they realised it was the one they'd found with the molotov cocktails in it. When asked, he said he had a gun in his front right trouser pocket. They then found another one in his other pocket. Chap is 70 years of age. Bizarre and stupid doesn't cover it. But, in light of another conversation on this thread, it screams (to me anyway) of white privilege. No black man would ever approach cops about a car full of bombs and guns and with two guns on their person. Not unless they had a death wish.

There's video of them actually opening doors on one side of the building and letting a mob (including cable ties guy - who's since been identified as a man from TN) into the building as the police stand by and one saying "I may not agree with it, but I can respect it" clearly in the video. The entrance led up a short flight of stairs straight into the rotunda.

Edit: here's the video I mentioned.

And why would you plant bombs at the rnc and DNC hq? And why would you have a dozen or so more bombs, us guns, in a truck nearby?

And why would you attempt to crush and mace a cop? Haven't heard a peep about these from the 'blue lives matter' boards brigade either.

And why would you bring tasers that you accidentally set off on your own balls to the point that you kill yourself?

And on and on the list goes.

I'd only just heard of that incident. Along with the lady who was trampled to death while carrying a "Don't tread on me" flag. There's a certain Darwinian feel to all of this. Podium guy was arrested as noted above. Doesn't look so cheery in orange.

Its a commentary of the value of life that the Capitol flags were half-masted in honour of slain CPD Officer Brian Sicknick but the flag at the White House remained at full mast despite it being the residence of the man who claims to be pro law and order. If Trump tries to get involved with the funeral, he should be told to forget it, that the family do not want him within sniffing distance.

I hope that, in respect of Officer Sicknick and his family, that the GOP members who continue to stand by Trump stay away from his funeral and don't continue to dishonour Brian Sicknick with the attitude espoused by Trump in his video message that people should just move on and forget his involvement with and preparation of the insurgent mob.

GOP members who disdain the idea of holding Trump responsible have Brian's blood on their hands. They have to stop this "we must get together as a nation" B/S and make Trump accept responsibility for the murder of Brian Sicknick.

Having seen some of the videos showing the clear violence used by Trump's private army against the police, I was surprised with the amount of restraint the police gave to those insurgents in response. No use of batons against them while they were visibly using extreme violence against the police in the Capitol.

On an note of whether the Republican Party has right wing views and members, one of its newly elected members [not senators] made it plain how U.S civil life should be guided live in front of the Capitol building. https://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/2021/01/incoming-gop-rep-says-hitler-was-right-in-speech-at-u-s-capitol/

Apparently Trump's mass-mailing provider has cut him off also, so he basically has no way to get deranged rants out to his existing subscriber base unless they re-follow him on somewhere like Parler. Which is no longer on the Google Play Store.

I'm surprised they don't see the advantage of plausible deniability they'd get if Trump was impeached and found guilty of the charge/s laid against him in the Congress as a whole [nothing to do with us]. He'll not be able to run for election again and this would totally split Trump from them, probably scuttle his involvement in any election schemes his son/s come up with as GOP candidates.

Pelosi intends following through on the 2nd impeachment and rightly so. What he did was inexcusable. The GOP each will have to make a choice.

A couple might buck the trend, but most will side with Trump unfortunately. Votes are far more important than principles for most of them.

Oh this just gets better and better.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/randalllane/2021/01/07/a-truth-reckoning-why-were-holding-those-who-lied-for-trump-accountable/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
From Day One at the Trump White House, up has been down, yes has been no, failure has been success. Sean Spicer set the tone with the inauguration crowd size – the worst kind of whopper, as it demanded that people disbelieve their own eyes. The next day, Kellyanne Conway defended Spicer’s lie with a new term, “alternative facts.” Spicer’s successor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders lied at scale, from smearing those who accused Trump of sexual harassment to conjuring jobs statistics. Her successor, Stephanie Grisham, over the course of a year, never even held a press conference, though the BS continued unabated across friendly outlets. And finally, Kayleigh McEnany, Harvard Law graduate, a propaganda prodigy at 32 who makes smiling falsehood an art form
Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie. We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.
this standard needs to apply to liars from either party. It’s just a realization that, as Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said, in a thriving democracy, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Our national reset starts there.

It'll get interesting when people eyeing their chances for promotion due to sudden GOP vacancies related to photos and quotes recorded while things were unravelling during the riot start emerging, like with new congresspersons and Senator Hawley.

His phone is basically a brick now. About the only thing he can do is take and make calls on it. Welcome back to the 1990s Donald.

Meanwhile his most loyal servant has been sent out to plead for him. Absolutely bizarre.

I wonder how much we're going to learn about the cause of Graham's loyalty in a few weeks time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,152 ✭✭✭26000 Elephants

Ive never seen that snake Graham so scared before - his voice is actually quavering.

I love the way he auto corrects himself, "This will destroy the country..... even further".

Yes, Lynds, like as if the storming of the seat of government wasn't the big thing here....

It's intriguing. I really do hope so. He's absolutely terrified of Trump.

Graham is calling for Biden to "do it" so Trump's vigilantes will be even more rageful towards him.

    Biden won't fall for that.

And no wonder he's shaking if he spent most of the day with Trump. Can only imagine what that would do to you 🀣

There is not enough outrage about this coming from US. That is the problem. Doesn't matter what we think.

Think about it and the effect on Trump. Not much really, just a waiting game until the 20th January, with talk about impeachment.

Was an outrageous thing, totally unreal. But it seems to be glossed over in the hope that 20/1 will happen and Trump will be silenced. Somehow I doubt that.

I don't think it's being glossed over at all. I think Monday will reveal a lot, as has been widely reported in the media.

It cannot be left go. Yes the Senate vote on impeachment will be done by the next session after the inauguration.
It's important to remember lives were lost and Trump wouldn't agree to mobilising against the mob. Pence in consultation with McConnell and Pelosi did that. In a way Pence did a coup.
