Apparently impeachment is still being pushed

195 co-sponsors of the articles of impeachment according to Ted Lieu. They’re only 22 short of having enough co-sponsors to pass it practically by default.

If Trump hadn't won in 2016 how much of the current climate would still exist? It's all bubbling under the surface, and it won't disappear in ten days. Trump seems to have been the lightning rod for it, but how much of the discontent did he actually create? People will be writing essays on the role of Trump in all of this someday with a little more hindsight. Being in the moment is a little weird.

The trans pacific trade deal falling through which led to the the Japan-EU deal.

The trade wars with all and sundry. With frequent u-turns.
Insane sanctions. Like the ones on Chinese steel and aluminium that ended up mostly targeting Canada and the EU.

Relationships with long term allies will take a lot of repairing. And that means concessions. In an era where China will soon overtake the US economically.

Maybe it already exists but that could be a nice future tactic. Don't abolish the filibuster but introduce a rule that if there are enough co-sponsors (over 50%) then it passes without a vote.

Wouldn’t that make the debating chamber redundant? Votes passing in congress without any debate would not be good for oversight or democracy.

Trump ran being a consummate hypocrite, he was one of the most popular GOP candidates ever, he swept the field. He can spout "law and order" in the same sentence he incites a mob and many Republican voters don't see the contradiction. The 6th of Jan was one of the most shameful events in US history, yet over 60% of Republicans think he did nothing wrong.

Any GOP senator who votes to impeach will be remembered as a traitor by a majority of Republican voters, now and in 10 years, how many are going to take that risk?
Sure, but less and less people are identifying themselves as part of a party, even more so the Republican party as demographics are against them. I mentioned it earlier but the 18-29 age group voted 62% for Biden, 35% for Trump. The majority opinion of Republicans will be irrelevant unless they appeal to moderate independents too.

Oh aye. Still preferable to a minority party being able to block everything IMO.

Looks like Pelosi is going to try and get Trump impeached if Pence doesn’t go along with the Twebty-Fifth. Could be a tumultuous first few days for Biden.

    Or perhaps even for Pence!

Speculation was alive last night on CNN about Trump firing all the Admin Dept Secretaries so there would be no cabinet for Pence to call together to bring amendment 25 into use.

The use of amendment 14 was also mentioned on CNN in reference to removing from office senators and congress members likely to act as electors for Trump, presumably referring to those who don't want to stop supporting him due to his involvement with the Capitol insurgents.

It probably irritates Trump that he can't sack Pence like he can his appointees, seeing as how he allegedly doesn't understand why Pence couldn't do his bidding to his election result tally.

Would that potentially just mean that Pence is the entirety of the cabinet, so would just need him for a unanimous decision to be made?

Yeah, maybe, although the way things are set up in the US there is probably no proper regulations and only a vague tradition which Trump can trample over.

This won't matter anyway because Pence will continue his spineless acquiescence and there is ZERO chance he will act on the 25th Amendment to remove Trump. It'll be up to Nancy Pelosi kicking off the impeachment process on Tuesday.

There's only 4 actual cabinet members serving currently. Pence, Mnuchin, Carson, and someone else ( i can't remember who). It's been argued that Pence needs to only get a majority of these members

What would happen if Pence said he only needed majority of confirmed cabinet and Trump said Pence needed majority of actual cabinet.

Supreme court would have to make a decision. Assuming it takes them time to make a decision would we have acting president Pence in the interim or would Ttump be president while deciding the issue.

The way it works is that the 25th is declared and Trump is immediately gone and Pence takes over.

Pence then has 4 days to officially inform the House/Senate of the actions. Once that happens , Trump can then lodge a counter claim to the House looking for it to be overturned.

However , the House then has 21 days to respond to that request from Trump.

So in effect if Pence calls it, Trump is gone. He might (unlikely) get it overturned after the fact but in terms of the next 10 days or so he'd no longer be President , which blocks his pardon ability among other things.

And in yet another example of "reading the room" and focusing on the important stuff , Trump will give Jim Jordan and Bill Belichick the Presidential Medal of Freedom this week.

I believe once article 4 of the 25th ammendment is called then Pence is automatically acting president and it's for Trump to argue against the removal

That's the way it's supposed to work.

But if Pence says 4 confirmed secretaries are cabinet and trump says that 4 confirmed and 11 acting secretaries are the cabinet theres a dispute on whether Pence legitimately activated the 25th.

We dont know. Supreme court settles it. Does Pence get to be acting President while the Supreme court debates whether Pence activated the 25th or not?

The second line of that letter from Pelosi annoys me - even the dems have to pander to the god-fearers, ahead of outlining any action or whats going on.

In fairness, that's Pelosi speaking. She constantly references god and says consistently she 'prays' for trump

Did a bit of browsing on Reddit earlier, and stumbled on r/Parlerwatch - and found this, apparently Parler was really rattled, and explains how various law enforcement agencies have been able to quickly create no fly lists/find those who participated in the Insurrection last Wednesday.

Safe to say that Parler users really aren't the sharpest tools in the garden shed.

Even if the data grab is not fully true, Id imagine its enough to scare the large crowds not to try the same on 20th. No Fly lists etc the bulk of them will see this and stay home. These people get amped up by the collective but are very much self preservers when left to their own devices.

I think we can safely say that Pence will not be acting on his responsibility to enact the 25th Amendment today. The time to run the 25th Amendment was last Wednesday as soon as the coup was attempted. To have waited so long is total abject dereliction of duty, but, sure, what's new there?
