Cars are advertised with WLTP range, the test for which is based on a very small proportion of motorway driving in perfect weather conditions.

I know that, you know that, but it's still a surprise to many new owners.

This failure of expectations would be resolved simply by cars being advertised in this country with a "range @ 120kph @ 10C" figure, but that's not in the interest of the manufacturers, and neither is it in the interest of the governments trying to persuade people to switch to electric, so it's not going to happen.

Nobody gives a crap about range @ 90kph, since range only matters on long journeys and those tend to be done at motorway speeds.

In any case, the bigger etrons are thirsty so it'll be interesting to see a proper range test of these smaller ones to see if they've improved things.

if there is any material difference between the etron q4 and the id4 in terms of range ill be surprised.

sportback has got a .26 drag coefficient. that will add maybe 10km of range at motorway speeds on the smallest battery.

I cant see the 35 model being any use anyway - definitely people will buy for the badge but if its going to be a poorer EV than a 41k ID4 or Enyaq, thats for sure.

Give the the amounts of miserly spec’d Audis with underpowered engines, I don’t see them having much of an issue.

Well said, yep, that's the only figure we need to compare EVs. I've been saying that for years. Consumption is irrelevant, WLTP / EPA / NEDC range irrelevant, range at any other speed or in mixed driving all irrelevant. Even the battery size is irrelevant.

Didn't I even give a name to this figure a few years ago? :p

    Wonder if it can tow?

ID.4 can, so I presume it's the same for the Audi.

Beware though, I have heard of people taking delivery of their ID.4 this week who specifically ordered and paid for the tow hatch (at an extremely expensive so hugely profitable €1800), but they are nowhere to be found and VW is playing dumb. The car is no good to them if it can't tow, there are no other EVs in budget that can. So they are in a terrible predicament. If they cancel the sale, they won't be able to get a towing EV until next year. Sort it out, Volkswagen Ireland.

It's on the model overview section but going by the E-tron and A3 TFSI E pricing and T&C's in the same section that price is before the 5k grant so likely it is starting at 42k for the basic spec. 6k more than the basic spec ID4.

It feels like they need to rationalise the e-tron naming scheme.
e-tron is a set of models and a tag to indicate a car is electrified in some capacity.

The A and Q naming scheme made sense, this mixed mode is a bit difficult

Not a hope will they care

    Q4 30 etron
    A3 35 tfsie
    A6 40 tdi
    A8 50 tdi
    Q7 55 tfsi

E Tron GT RS (or might be the other way around)

The Verge's last podcast was discussing this. They were pondering where along the scale did Sonos' involvement come. Where 0=taking a cheque for the name to 10 being custom design hardware. I think they all guessed 2/3 at best, where Sonos may "tweak" the sound profile. I mean this is a company that specialises in multi room audio... so it's a natural fit for a car:pac: I did like Nilay's suggestion that they should look into stereo sound when pairing two Audis.

A6 etron concept debuted today. Looks a real cracker. Most journalists expect it to be very close to concept when released too. Late 2022 or 2023 depending on who you talk to. Guessing somewhere in the 60k region starting price?

That;s lovely looking. A real competitor to the model S, as it looks better (IMO) and seems to offer similar numbers to the standard range S

Yes but think I've underestimated cost. Watched the video in full on that link and Matt Watson reckons it will be undercutting etron GT by just a few thousand, starting at 70k region in UK means 85 odd here....

Model S standard (IE the LR model, not the plaid or plaid +) is still north of 90k. 85k for this is pretty competitive in the segment.

I'm still guessing at the 85k. Who knows what way grants and vrt will be in 2 years time. One thing for sure, I'll be waiting for a used one anyway. But there's a few things in the interim that will keep me happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,077 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I'd be more likely to pay 85k for this than to pay 85k for a model S. My prior S I paid 42k for at 3 years old and sold for ~38k at 5 years old. More value in older Teslas due to the updates etc

    €85k - €90k, at that end of things I don't think €5k matters as much as back around €35k - €40k.
Choice will not come down to economics, it will be build quality, performance and looks

    Hi all,
Looking for some advice. I currently have a nice Diesel A6 S line and I am looking at changing it with the PCP up later in the year. I am really interested in the Q4 and I've spoken to a number of audi dealers about it. I am looking at the Q4 40 etron and was given the below information 511kms range on a full charge AC charging 11kw 7.5hours DC charging 38mins (125kw).
I am working from home currently and will likely do a mix of office commute and working from home once things return to some sort of normal. My commute would be a 120km round trip each day. Do you think its reasonable to go EV or would a diesel still be better until range improves. One thing to add is that I am not 100% sure if my employer has EV charging as I have just got a new job (not starting untl June), but given their profile I would be amazing if they do not. I can find that out in the coming days/weeks though. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

A Q4 e-Tron will have no problem at all with that commute, do you have off-street parking at home that will allow you to install a home charge point?
Work charging is a nice to have, but not something I'd want to rely on.

The range wont be 511km id imagine it will be more like 350-400km so more than enough to cover your commute.

If you have charging at home do you need it at work?

Sorry, I should have stated that I will be getting a home charger point in the future but I am currently in plans to extend the house which means we have to move out for 5 months, so I am anticipating having no home charger for a up to 9 months (once we secure builder etc)
