It is a disgrace that Today FM are advertising foreign travel to Covid-19 riddle locations like Italy. It is socially irresponsible on the part of airlines and media outlets.

I understand airlines need planes in the air to generate money and Today FM needs advertising revenue, but so much more of Irish society have given up alot and suffered massive losses, in excess of 1700 people have died, how many more is acceptable so that executives can get more stock options to cash in.

Michael O'Leary is worth €1 Billion

Denis O'Brien is worth €3 Billion

    When is enough money enough?

    Italy is not 'riddled'
It currently has one of the lowest infection rates in Europe

My use of the word riddled may be incorrect in this case but there are still an estimated circa 15,000 cases in Italy.

And the main point is, international travel is still not recommended by our government.

Why would Today FM support it?

They don't. Ryanair paid for the ad.

    Doubt it.
More likely they haven't updated their 'recovery' stats in a while as they are only getting 100-150 infections per day and you are normally considered uninfected after 14.

Why not support it? Presumably they are getting paid to run the ads
Foreign travel is completely legal and in fact a right. just because our CMO recommends otherwise does make it any different. A few weeks ago he was recommending not going outside or travelling isnide the country and now pubs and bars are opened and he has said he is looking forward to going to them and having a stay cation down the country

If a doctor recommends you don't drink or gamble that doesn't mean that a radio can't run ads for them

if the government wants to stop travel they know what to do but aren't going to do it.

Air bridges and International travel to 'safe' countries will be officially endorsed next week (and Italy will be on the green list)

Two sides to this. On the one hand, there is definitely pressure on radio stations in the midst of the pandemic for ad revenue since so many regular customers shut up shop for so long. The reality is they are probably financially ducked rn.

On the other hand, I can see the point about social responsibility but it's not really a breach of any rules or laws since the government are being so mealy mouthed about travel. It's not recommended from a health perspective but no one will stop you. It's a matter of individual personal choice and social responsibility whether you want to go away and risk reintroducing the virus on your return or even potentially reintroducing the virus at your destination.

Most people can suck it up and not bother with the sun holiday this year. There are apparently some people who have a divine right to go overseas that renders a pandemic emergency subordinate. They are mostly the same people who are also too good for social distancing, mask wearing and presumably the gamut of health advice currently in place.

The rights and wrongs of advertising flights are pretty grey imo. If you are one of the deities walking about the place then I suppose you'd be happy to hear flights are back on. If you're an ordinary Joe with a bit of empathy, you might react like the OP and call it out as pretty crappy from a #StaySafe (the current government watchword) perspective.

Why don't you send a list of companies that you feel should be allowed to advertise on Today FM to them?

The General Administration of Press and Publication in China would be proud of this topic....

A Business can advertise what they want. No one is forced to buy the product. A virus expert from UCC this morning said there's no reason why people can't fly on a holiday and he'd go himself.
