Don’t waste your 10,000 post trying catch someone out about Irish and Irish controlled international airspace.............
I'll do another 10,000 posts on just this subject because its such a dangerous falsehood.

The irony of it is that us having a squadron of fighter jets might be the thing which would actually force Russia/China/whoever to actually attack us in the first place. They would be the only weapon systems which might threaten a foreign power.

The only circumstance I would see fighter jets being purchased would be in the context of a mandatory EU Defence Force; where the EU was subsidising a modern air defence network in and around Ireland. This might be more likely if the UK drifts further and further away from world events and continues to isolate itself.

    We don't have any enemies.

    We are neutral.

As we have a large maritime area, I'd say you could argue for investment in more SAR helicopters / naval vessels / naval aircraft.

We do have enemies IMO but we are surrounded by traditionally friendly countries who are all armed to the teeth (3 nuclear powers on UN security council) so can afford to have effectively no military & a dubious neutrality policy.

Would agree though, and if govt. are to suddenly give huge new resources to the army/defence forces here, would seem other areas (seas, coastline etc) would be more important.

Also just spending more on general recruitment and remuneration/conditions in the army etc, think there's been complaints about this for years from the defence forces.
