Looking like Simon gets to keep his Chauffeur (Garda) driven car. My o My, its not so long ago Mr Coveney was on a mission to Banish such luxuries. The reasons for this decision are as Bizarre as Leo getting a Military Aide De Camp.

So he goes cross border occasionally, could he not take a leaf out of Drew Harris's book, have the PNSI meet him at the Border ??

I'M afraid Simon & Leo have been in power a little too long, Bertie Ahern would be proud of their carry on.

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

A Hyundai would do the exact same job. A BMW/Mercedes for the Taoiseach and president In the international penis measuring competition, but Hyundai’s for everyone else. If the Gardai, HSE and DF are forced to use these vehicles then surely Leinster house should.

I went to school with the kids of a FF TD who was a junior minister at the time. Garda driver dropped them off to school most days and picked them up too, in a shiny new Audi.

So many snouts, such a big trough...

What have you got against Dacia? A Dacia Sandero would do the job.

when somebody has a Garda driver and car its generally because they need the car and driver to protect them from dangers. If they were in a Dacia, the Dacia itself becomes one of those dangers.

He's a high ranking government official.

Like how people work in high ranking jobs wear formal attire, they should also travel in formal transport, nothing wrong with using a Mercedes.

Last thing we need is someone like Mick Wallace arriving for meetings in a 1996 Toyota Corolla wearing a pink polo shirt.

the Government sought security advice from An Garda Síochána and it was decided Mr Coveney should retain the State security service despite stepping down as Tánaiste.

seems like its the recommendation from the Gardai.

BMW actually do specialised police and government models, they came in cheaper than Hyundai for the contract back in the recessionary times, so It was decided that the gardai 'can't be seen to be driving round in new luxury cars in a recession' and the bog ball enthusiasts favourite Hyundai was chosen.

It’s nothing short of a disgrace.

It’s not part of his position.

Especially at time when we are being warned of a massive recession around the corner.

    Good one with the outrage

Are we going to listen to this sh*t now for the next few years?

These cars are leased anyway and there would not be much difference in the cost over a number of years.

I worked in a company years ago where the company cars went from Laguna to BMW. The Union kicked up stink, said it was a disgrace but went quiet fairly fast when they were shown there was no difference in price.

No, it will be buried and dead by the summer recess as usual.

Glad everything is Rosie at castle Shefwedfan though...

I can't help feeling that we get bogged down in the really unimportant stuff and through that, miss the important things.
He is Minister for Foreign Affairs. It doesn't seem extraordinary at all to me that he would have a Garda driven car.
There are lots of things that we should be concerned about and debate. This is an irrelevancy that only distracts from important issues.

It really isn't. The Merc and security detail is befitting the role he is in.

There are a lot of things to complain about, this is not one of them.

Befitting like the new ministers of state and their swollen salaries? Like last years TD salary increase? Like this years “no less than 2%” pay rise? Like the council pay rise? Where does it stop?

His role does not carry that “perk”, well it didn’t until he asked for it.

I agree completely about there being other much worse things to complain about but this is the topic of the thread we are on.

He has a decent job, gets a decent car.

Your more than welcome to become a politician as well and get those perks

Or you can sit on boards and complain, your choice

Yawn - for the third time he is a politician who’s position did not carry that perk(at my/our expense as the taxpayer)

Why should he now get that perk?

If you have nothing constructive to add why comment or is that you Simon?

I somehow doubt someone sitting on boards in the middle of the day is paying all that much tax :p

No attempt, person has good job, has good car.

Politicians as we know need no qualification or anything. So your more than welcome to go to FF/FG or whoever and apply.

So as far as I am concerned people should shut up crying about what a politician gets or doesn't get because if they wanted they could be one themselves. THe only excuse is laziness.
