Even if they banned alcohol, which the puritants over at NPHET are dieing to do in general.

Have they said they want to do that I didnt see it and didnt think that was part of their role so dont know why theyed make a decision like that. But like the other said, they cant actually do stuff only advise the government who can take the advise or not. But didnt see them say that about alcohol. Like until a vaccine or just as one of the stages. I know they done that it South Africa but didnt hear of other countrys.

I'd say a lot of bars that were set up to reopen tomorrow and got less than a weeks notice they couldn't will be opening Tuesday or Wednesday with a sandwich toaster and a soup kettle......

Which if fair enough if they want because it still brings the benefit that lots wont or even those that do wont have as many customers and keeps things under control which is the aim and a good way to do it.

Do they not need restaurant licenses?

It seems several rural pubs were open last night going by some of my FB friends!

Could the pubs not charge their customers €9 for a slice of frozen pizza or bowl of soup or basic sandwich and then gift them their third pint free ?

They will need to have a kitchen and expect checks from covid and health officers to inspect their kitchen premises and food preparation area I'd imagine.

No. The rules where changed to allow pubs to operate as restaurant without the need for having a restaurant licence.

    When was this!!

I that all pubs opened at the moment were ones with a restaurant licence, which was 1 way to persuade them to comply. I say given that pubs were ready to open this week the government could on a Friday eith this or next week could announce pubs could reopen

If I remember correctly it was changed a part of Phase 3 reopening. Pubs which only serve alcohol were due to open as part of phase 4. Which has now been delayed.

From the beginning of the regulations. Any pub that wanted could open as long as they did the dinners. Any ones closed are closed by their choice.

Back before phase 3. There was to be a rush to the courts to get restaurant licences so government decided they didn't need one. Was said by Varadkar at the time. Any pub can open so long as they supply a meal worth no less than €9. No licence needed, anywhere thats remained closed basically couldn't offer food or just didn't bother

Pubs at the moment are operating as restaurants. However they do not need to have a restaurant license. They do however need to offer a meal to the value of 9 euros.

For example one of the pubs near me pre-Covid never did food and did not have a restaurant license. They have been open the last two weeks offering Pizza for 9 euros

Pub and restaurant licences are completely separate.

Even before covid a pub could serve food without a restaurant licence, all they needed was an inspection from the health department to approve the kitchen and thats it

That is because they are opening as a restaurant as they serve food which would have been part of the licence they god. No?

Edit. I am wrong as per other poster

Ok thanks for that I had always thought it was part of the pub licence. You learn everyday

It's a mess to be honest.

Hence why you've a fair few pubs opening still tomorrow with a limited food offering.

Know of a pub myself thats getting pizza from a local pizza place. You'll pay €10 on the way in, get a €9 voucher and exchange it for a pizza, so your first pint is €1

Soon see how many go through and open tomorrow

Some Professor said that earlier; 'love to know how you're safer in a pub by buying a €9 sandwich as opposed to one who doesnt? '

They should be all shut or all open.

The narrative has been falling apart since they let the protests happen in May. Now they're supposed be letting Muslims celebrate Eid in Croke Park at the end of the month, but will most likely turn around in December and tell us that Christmas is cancelled "for the greater good".

And they wonder why people aren't complying anymore. The selective enforcement.

Didnt think theyd have to explain that to a professor since their supposed to be sharp lads. Of course its safer because it puts up the price like in economics where you make something more expensive then theirs less buyers and cheapen it and theres more. So it was a good way to reduce the risk while still letting pubs get back to some business, let people do a bit of socialising even if its not like we used to do, and let those who really keen on going for a pint do it with those less fussed happy enough not to bother for the moment. Give them credit where its due because it was a well balanced way to go.

You do realise NPHET don’t have any power?

Their advise has been rejected on a number of occasions.

There is advise and ADVISE. If NPHET said if you don't do X we are all resigning, Micheal Martin will piss himself and bow to them. I would imagine they were pretty strong on making sure the pubs remained closed.

No pictures of pints this morning is disappointing :(

Did Whelans publican stick to his word and open this morning?

Even if they banned alcohol, which the puritants over at NPHET are dieing to do in general. What difference does it make to sit down at a table, have a meal and a water over 2 hours, than sitting down at the exact same table and having 3-4 pints.

I don't mind the 2 hour limit. I don't mind the notion of staying at your table and not moving around either. What I do mind is NPHET completely abusing their power for ideological purposes. It is nothing to do with Covid
    Absolutely nothing.

This is a really stupid post. What age are you, 12?

200 people at an outdoor gathering, within the guidelines so whats your issue?

NPHET have been pretty strong on incoming tourists etc, the Govt have not taken their advice on this issue
