They’re already panicking after his opening comment.

Just tuned in. What he say?

It only needs those 3 digits....those are three they need when the scammers are being prompted to logon....

    He did it....twice!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

I was unhappy with being scammed once, so I did it again.

I got an email this morning from eir saying a credit card payment had failed. Was a bit suspicious, so did a bit of digging and the fraudsters were looking for all my card details along with my date of birth! Needless to say I didn't do it!

He must have given his PIN - no doubt about it.

3 digits twice is the key?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,139 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

    "Through the Bank of Ireland"

Can someone please check if the Liveline legal contact is ok? I would be having a coronary right now.

Just tuned in. What he say?

He said BOI were facilitating the scam by allowing the hackers to use their phone number on “the Bank Of Ireland thread”.....or words to that effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,373 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I get spam emails from netflix (not from netflix) and PayPal (not from paypal).
Look at the source of the email, the grammar, don't click on the hyperlink.
If it looks dodge it is...ring the bank with number on back of your card

He (or she) is clearly on holidays. There’s been about 5 comments so far that will land them in hot water.

Clearly BOI have an issue as well to some degree....any calls about another bank?...... but there has to be some personal responsibility...look at the sender...look at the web address ffs!!!

I've been with Permanent TSB for about 25 years. The only text message i ever get is to say my salary has gone into my account.

What's going on? Are BOI stealing cars now?

I get at least 5 emails per day and a text message every 2 days or so trying to get me to fall for a scam. What people need to realise is that nearly every such one IS a scam.

Close, but no cigar. One Time Passcode. Those that reveal them are One Time Prats. More than one time in some cases.

    That's exactly what happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,024 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

But... That is what happened Joe? THEY clearly clicked the link. Their choice. The bank was not in their home clicking the link for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Stop saying car keys you muppet! This is the second time I’ve had to ask!

Joe is just being deliberately stupid here. No one is saying that anyone gave their car keys to a stranger.

Joe trying to do another run on a bank.
I expect his trousers to be pulled down and his arse roundly booted after this.
The Golden Circle members at the top of the tree in the BoI won't take kindly to this.

Btw, that snotty person at the beginning sounded almost exactly like the snotty person who informed me that phantom entries could never occur.

Joe, if I get a mock B365 webpage, and I put in my account login, the fraudster can do the same on the real website, set up a payee quickly, and away with the money

Entered my details and my pin. Bad enough being thick but now telling de listeners how thick you are. Jesus wept

Everyday i listen to RTE radio on the player online, everyday without fail its an ad for Dublin tourism, no mention of any other county in any other advert.....also that car keys "analogy" made no sense...

'Wash your hands of Bank of Ireland'

    ???

did he also have lots of bank shares with them ? ?

BOI to be closed by 3PM ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,024 ✭✭✭DoctorEdgeWild

Joe absolutely running the car key metaphor into the ground, even though it's a really useful way to educate people about how important keeping their banking info secure is.

Less interested in serving the public than he is in scoring imaginary points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,531 ✭✭✭cozar

The car keys analogy is annoying, how many more times is he going to repeat it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭generalgerry

I think there are two elements on this.

    1) The phone number sending the SMS texts has been spoofed. This is not the bank's fault. However like was said above, if the bank had not been sending messages through this number then this would not be an issue.
    2) The link was sent to the person. Given that phishing scams are THE biggest issue for business and private citizens, should they have been a bit more aware that it might be a scam. The fact that it came from the same phone number is what convinces them that it is legit.

So I think there is blame on both sides and the bank should recognise that.

If the mock websire asks for 3 digits from 6 of the new PIN, the real website will ask for the same ones!
