Ryan was paid to be there, to be at work, to be doing his job. He neglected to do that and instead slept. He receives in and around 100,000 a year give or take of public money. The least he can do is earn the money, by remaining awake, while he is at work... it’s a gross insult to the electorate, those who pay his wages, put their faith IN him and responsibility ON him just to see him zzzzzzzzzzz his way through work... unsat. Let it be remembered at the next vote.

It is not unheard of. Gwan now with your pontifications.

Sunday papers and radio shows will just slag him.

I don’t care if it’s unheard of or not, that gives him a hall pass.. ?

    Pontifications ? Right :)

So workers should live at poverty levels to prop up rural businesses?
    What about urban businesses?
    Large retail chains?

Ryan wants Leicester style sweatshops, surprised it didn't make bigger headlines or is it already happening here?

Only human. And before anyone brings up his salary, in the scheme of things it's no more serious a cost to the taxpayer in a country with free 3rd level education than kipping in a lecture.

And it could be MUCH worse. At least he wasn't deliberately disrespectful about it:

It's been mentioned here a few times, supposedly it is widespread and many workers sleep during their working hours. I've asked, what industries, no response. It's complete nonsense, and if even the very most low level shift worker fell asleep during their duty there would be implications.

But, none of this matters, even if that totally fictitious situation of all these shift-workers and bored over worked corporate workers falling asleep regularly happened as mentioned here...this was a newly appointed minister who was awoken by the chief whip to vote on legislation of the country. That is serious.

Either way, he is an absolute joke of a man at this stage and wont be taken seriously, not that he ever was.

If you fell asleep working shift in a Supermacs you'd have more come back. This gomgreen* is the leader of a party in a newly minted government, in his new job, voting on issues that effect low paid workers.
    Shameful.
Hope he gets the elbow soon, we might get some competence in government.

    *patent pending

Hey envious trolls.. It’s called power napping. All the great leaders did it, including Winston Churchill and Napoleon Boneparte.

While Eamon Ryan sleeping during his job is bad, still not as bad as that horrible cretin Danny Healy Rae picking his nose and eating it during Dail session.

Troll ? Ehhhh the words pot, kettle and black spring to mind... :)

The great leaders of the world slept, yes... though they choose their times to sleep with a higher degree of diligence so as to get their job done, awake and alert... :)

so far the defence of Ryan asleep

    - no big deal
    - he works so hard, may have an illness or condition
    - everyone does it
    - SF would do it
    - Rees Mogg did it disrespectfully

    This is piss poor.

Ah look, the guy shouldn't have fallen asleep, but does it really matter? The guy is human, it was a nothing debate, no harm done.

I wonder how people sustain such levels of rage. Just relax like. This was a mildly amusing episode and should be treated as such.

It wasn’t even during a debate; it was during a vote on a debate that had already taken place the day before. It’s essentially the equivalent of falling asleep during roll call for a class of 160.

You seem like a reasonable person. The rage is in reality nobody voted for this government. Even as an FG, FF, Green voter you must must feel some level of disillusion with our system. Nobody expected this and nobody voted for this.

Then within 3 weeks we have 1 minister who has been sacked and there are some very dodgy details about that whole process. Then another minister who is sleeping during a vote. This is 3 weeks.

I worked in many jobs bereft of visual stimuli, I don’t think using that as an excuse to my bosses would save myself from some upfront management feedback or worse... he isn’t there to be stimulated, there to be awake and do a job.

He was so interested in sticking it to low paid workers he couldn't even stay awake long enough to listen to the details. Twat behavior.
