Assessment of newly bought house for energy upgrades

    Hi all,

Recently bought a BER C2 1991 built house which has natural gas heating. I’m coming from an A3 rated new build with air to water heat pump.

I know they are certain grants available for heating and energy upgrades and would like to take advantage of them. Is there such a thing as an impartial company/service who will come out and assess your house from an energy efficacy point of view and give advice?

I’d be open to considering solar , zoning the heating system and anything else recommended.

    Any advice appreciated

My advice is to put things like solar, zoning, grants etc to the back of your mind until you have had a full heat loss survey done by an independent surveyor. This will leave you in no doubt about where your heat is being lost and what will / wont fix the problem. By reducing drastically your heat loss, how you supply the then vastly reduced heat demand is a much simpler (and cheaper) solution generally without the need for grant aided "eco bling". All this assumes you're interested in a proper long term solution.

Could you recommend anyone for this heat loss survey ? I’ve read previous threads on boards similar to this and it seems the BER assessment is just a paper ticking excercise. A recommendation for a good independant heat loss assessor would be appreciated.
