There's a crazy amount of lights after going up on the Dunkettle/Glanmire roundabout. The Dunkettle Progress Update states they are to facilitate safe crossing facilities for pedestrians/cyclists (can't imagine there will be a huge volume of either) but does anyone know if the lights are going to on a fixed change schedule or juts activated when necessary? If the former then surely that will only make traffic far worse in the area.
I'm going to email and ask anyway but though someone here might know as well.

It's not really to facilitate the safe crossing of pedestrians/cyclists, but because the Dunkettle Interchange will soon be free-flow,
which will make traffic far heavier in the Dunkettle Roundabout area. The pedestrians/cyclists are getting a "PFO" path. The lights aren't for their benefit.

The lights will be on a fixed schedule but won't be the source of the traffic, basically.

Think of it this way: all the lights on the M8/N40/N25 junction (the Tunnel Intechange) are coming West.

I would think think though that heavier traffic and lights won't help traffic flow any better. Especially coming from the n25 direction in the morning and off the lower Glanmire road in the evening. In both cases traffic coming from the right is relatively light so the roundabout should accommodate the increased volume. With lights in operation you risk a buildup behind on the routes above.

Yes but the Tivoli DC Eastbound backs up quite a bit in the evenings. The Tunnel-to-Glanmire traffic will becomes freeflow and will negatively affect this.

Its all part of a broader plan, these lights are just a piece.

The dunkettle progress update issued today explains a bit more.

As of this moment , you cannot cycle Cork City centre to Little Island safely . Which is really just typical of the disjointed City/ County planning . Little island generally has greater than 10K daily workers commuting, from the City and Suburban areas to little island and it is all the river valley, flat as you can possibly get , yet you cannot safely, walk, run or cycle to little island.

When all the pieces come together you should be able to cycle from city centre to Carrigtwohill and little island safely , which nearly gets you to the midleton to youghal greenway so will be pretty excellent for cyclists and commuters. These parts will also connect up to glanmire and the new developments there.

Are we the only country that puts traffic lights on roundabouts?

    No we're not.
