Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Eddie Murphy
Bill Murray - this one was just plain nasty. Could you not have matched them against a couple of no-hopers like De Niro or Pacino?

Somebody made a boo boo earlier when they said Kurt Russell peaked in the 70s. :)

In the 80s he did Escape from new York, Big trouble in little China, Silkwood, The Thing, Used cars (excellent comedy if you haven't seen it), Overboard and Tango and Cash among others.
All he really did in the 70s were those Disney films iirc.

Yeah I wouldnt be familar with his early stuff but I'd agree the 80s and probably 90s were his most prolific decades.

Overboard is very underrated, himself and Goldie still going strong unwed, couple goals

I recommend Tequila Sunrise too with Kurt, Mel Gibson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Raul Julia

Not fond of what later work I saw. Overboard was atrocious (but I blame it on the missus overacting.)

    John Rhys-Davies

Corey Feldman. A tough one but Corey is quintessential 80’s

    Chevy Chase. As above

Sigourney Weaver. Ellen Ripley was gonna be my major reason but it seems only Alien 2 was in the 80’s. First one was 79 and third was 92. Mad. Still picking her though.

As much as I love that video, you're kinda dismissing his whole career, his best work was in the 80s

Fletch, caddyshack, NL, 3 amigos to name but a few.

Oh, they're good too (not Caddyshack so much, but the others), just that the vid is the best of the lot :)

I can't wrap my head around Chevy Chases' film attempts (like those christmas films), he seemed to quickly become an over-acting/egotistical caricature of his snl persona (as in Roxanne). ...the Al vid was cute though!

That Elf actor (ugh) reminds me of a bad Chevy Chase impersonator.

But I am really not a huge movie buff, so what do I know. :o

He wasn't in Roxanne, that was Steve Martin. And actually last night I remembered Roxanne as another of Martin's great 80s movies.

(just double checked in case he had a small role in it that I'd forgotten about, but no, according to Wiki, definitely not in it).

Yep, I noted my error and deleted post.... sorry!
Chevy Chase isn't my cuppa tea.

I tried watching Roxeanne last month, Martins "humorous" diatribes were totally cringeworthy -- then again I am not a big film watcher so...
However, I liked Martins Father of the Bride films later on.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

If you liked Father of the Bride, watch Parenthood. it's one of my favourite films ever. It's not a "typical Steve Martin comedy". In fact, I'd call it a drama with some funny bits, more than a comedy with some dramatic bits. It's an ensemble too, so if you don't dig his character there are lots of other characters you could like.

I also love LA Story (just in to the 90s though), but that's more old style Steve Martin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,681 ✭✭✭✭Deja Boo

I shall check out both, Parenthood and LA Story, thanks quickbeam! :)

I'm a big Steve Martin fan, but God I hate The Father of the Bride, it's just not funny. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains are his funniest films imo.

Did you see him in Pink Panther? Was it good? I've only seen bits of the old one with David Niven.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Yeah, not a fan of Father of the Bride either, but if Deja likes family orientated films, then I think Parenthood would suit more than The Jerk, et al. I don't think she'd like them at all.

I like his Carl Reiner quartet. All of Me is very underrated.

The Pink Panther is diabolical, don't go near it.

and with that, goes the last of the lost boys cast and I won't be getting to put this gif to any good use so I'll just post it now.

Haven't seen that, the Peter Sellers Pink Panther films were perfect as they were and there's no need to go messing around with remakes imo.

Quickbeam, All of Me is brilliant. I'm not a big fan of Lily Tomlin, but she was superb in that film. Haven't seen it in years, must try to dig it out somewhere.
