It sounds completely wrong to leave business hanging just so politicians, who have failed, can save face and not have to take the blame.

But...Boris did say, "Fuck business." And I think if businesses held politicians feet to the fire, e.g. standing them up in a group with a few thousand business people all shouting, "What should we expect? What should we do" the politicos will eventually break down and say, "We've no bloody idea. What do you think?" 4 years and really, the politicians are years away from knowing what to do or recommend.

Good luck, England, in a few weeks.

If a deal is eventually agreed, I hope we can trust the UK to abide by it.

The current UK administration can't be trusted on anything.

Maybe they have told some business people what to do, e.g. Dyson!

Boris will want to be seen to be the saviour of the deal.
    Its all about optics

I hate to say it but this might be right. The problem with the deal is that someone in the Brexit coalition is getting disappointed and there's nothing Johnson can do about it. All he's interested in is playing the saviour while doing as little as possible in the process.

When a government are willing to break international law without even thinking twice, how can you trust that?

Not sure how linked this is to Brexit, it seems to be excused as a Covid reaction, but hard not to see a brexit dimension.

But UK Dept if Transport is relaxing the European Driving hour regulations to assist with uncertainty regarding freight transport. So Yay, drivers now can work longer hours, with fewer breaks and disregard regulations brought in for road safety

As a coach and occasional truck driver who's been stopped by VOSA on many an occasion in the UK and lectured about driving hours i find this hilarious.

I think now that that might have been the same sort of silly gambit that we saw with the prorogation of Parliament in 2019. All it really accomplished was to waste time while trying to score points with the public. Now, Johnson can say that he got something from the Europeans while anyone who's been following this rolls their eyes.

While we await the substantive news to emerge, the menu doesn't sound particularly appetising - pumpkin soup with scallops, followed by turbot in wasabi sauce:

Starter sounds good, not so much the main.

Is it supposed to be symbolic that their are 2 fish courses?! :)

As long as it's not two course fishes. Don't forget Ursala VdL has to eat it to.

Let 'em off now for a few months of no deal and politically kill off Farage, Banks, Tice, and the ERG forever.

A little revolution now and then is a healthy thing.

If EU agree to a deal, the British will be like '' ah they're only agreeing because they're screwing us over'' No matter what deal the EU agree, the Brexiters think it's because the EU are winning.
Can win with Brexiters . No deal will be good enough, no matter how much backing down the EU do.

Just put us out of our misery, you either want a deal or you don't. If Johnson wants a deal he will have to move, if he doesn't, why do we have to wait for another 4 days. This is just ridiculous by now.

Well if he's been advising them, is it any surprise that they're in the state they're in?

I'm assuming that things genuinely must be going badly. If Johnson was angling for a PR win, he would hardly have flounced out and flown straight back to London with not even a hint of progress made.

I honestly don't believe he went there with any intention of getting a deal. We are in a situation now where optics are king.......

No : left the building and headed straight back to London without speaking to anyone (not a good sign).

Given Johnson's flair for the dramatic and theatrical performances there's a part of me that thinks a new deadline which is 12 days from Christmas was deliberately chosen so Johnson can play the part of the festive gift giver if there's a deal.

'And I say to you, friends, now you can be of good cheer. We have found a way forward to prosper mightily. Merry Christmas one and all' yadda, yadda, yadda. It is Panto season after all.

I think it's more brinkmanship but von der Leyen won't be biting. The British will have to compromise or have no deal. No deal represents failure politically for Johnson. If it didn't, he'd have proudly walked away. He's still going back for more for a reason.

He starts of saying that the EU is desperate for a deal then ends saying the UK is desperate for a deal. Bit of a clown really.
