Nobody cared. Sure FF here had to bring in that rule about presenting a tax clearance cert before being put forward for election after Bertie, Mccreevy and Haughey were all found to be taking envelopes etc.. We haven't had slick talent like them since. I wouldn't trust a politician who wasn't trying to dodge taxes to actually cut them.

    Two thirds of people care.

Forgive my ignorance but... if he had done anything illigal re. taxes would the IRS know about it?

He's not hiding anything he's under no obligation to release them.

People want to see his tax returns to prove that he's not making policy decisions that financially benefit him.

Trump - I'm under no obligation to release my tax returns , it's nobodies business and nobody cares anyway.

Also Trump - Obama must release his birth cert to prove he's American , he can't be President if he doesn't do this , the American people have a right to know about their President so they can trust him.

Lets go through an example. Let's say Trump owes Alfabank, a Russian government front, $1bn in a loan. The loan might've been legitimate at the time it was taken out. This loan required repayments and Trump perhaps claims interest deduction on his taxes (hand waving here - assume a transaction with a Russian owned organization is mentioned on his taxes, or his business's taxes.)

Nothing illegal, IRS might notice this, the audit largely looks for whether the filer is correctly following IRS regulations.

Now, nothing illegal here but should the POTUS owe $1bn to a Russian-owned bank, whose overall purpose is to earn money, for Russia?

what a funny hypothetical scenario you've picked there, not trying to imply anything at all..

It's highly unlikely that he has "fiddled his taxes" - As you say , the IRS would likely have found it.

However , for example , there is evidence that what he does is provide a true value for his assets to the IRS , but then grossly over-values them for the purpose of Insurance claims or securing loans with Banks , Business partners etc.

    That is illegal.

NY has just opened another case for this specific activity relating to Property in upstate New York.

There's also the far more likely "concern" on the Trump side , that his tax returns will show that he isn't a billionaire and never has been and that he really isn't very good at business.

Remember , from the little tax information we have , he posted the single largest loss from an individual tax payer across multiple years.

Sure, releasing his taxes would clear everything but he appears to be actively afraid of them coming out before the election.

it is not a hypothetical. trump has been borrowing from russian banks for years because american banks refuse to lend him any more money

Look, leaving the dementia debate aside.

Joe is significantly poorer in his communication than the latter years of the Obama Presidency.

    Taxes

    SAT scores

    College exam results

For someone with nothing to hide he sure does go to a lot of trouble to keep things out of the public eye.

The funny thing is, everyone on this thread knows without question what would have happened if Biden (or even Hilary 2016) refused to release their tax returns.

Not everyone wants to see them since some people don't care about them as long as he keeps his promise of Making America Great Again.

He didn't really believe that Obama wasn't an American citizen he was just showing us how easy it is to manipulate the media and get them talking about a story that he created.

Explaining Trump's behaviour after the fact as some sort of clever analysis of society.... Do you really believe that?

    Yes I can't support a criminal.

The only people who actually care about his tax returns were diehard dem voters anyway. The tax return thing doesn't bother floating voters or republicans anyway, America is a country that was built on avoiding taxes, its one of the most patriotic things you can do there. Not releasing the returns makes everyone think theres something in there which makes middle and upper America only resonate with him.

No **** sherlock .... as if a republican or Trump cult follower would like to see his tax returns

    Yes I can't support a criminal.

    Pick one
He illegally discriminated against prospective black and Hispanic tenants in his real estate business way back in the 1970s. He avoided charges by settling with the Justice Department and paying a fine.

He illegally hired undocumented workers for his various businesses. He avoided charges by using his money and influence to sweep those crimes under the rug.

He illegally operated a fraudulent “university” and a self-dealing “foundation.” He avoided charges by paying millions of dollars to settle those cases.

He has been credibly accused of sexual harassment/assault by more than a dozen women. He avoided charges by attacking his victims and spending untold fortunes on legal defense.

He was an unindicted co-conspirator in the illegal porn-star adultery payoffs that landed his personal lawyer in prison. He avoided charges largely because of a questionable Justice Department guideline that says sitting presidents can’t be indicted.

He illegally obstructed justice in the investigation of his 2016 election collusion with Russia. He avoided charges because Special Counsel Robert Mueller declined to make a recommendation about whether or not his actions were criminal. Spoiler alert: Thousands of former federal prosecutors say his actions were, indeed, criminal.

He illegally solicited election interference from a foreign nation, illegally obstructed the congressional investigation of his actions, illegally extorted/bribed a foreign leader for political favors, and illegally withheld foreign aid approved by Congress. He avoided charges because he’s a sitting president. He was impeached but not removed from office because Republicans in the Senate served as his tainted jury and bent reality to suit their political motives.
