Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi lads

I would like some ideas for securing garden gates if you have any ideas. Its a double steel gate securing a drive way. 1 gate has the lock and the other side has a drop bolt into the floor. Basically when the gate is locked the drop bolt can be lifted and both gates moved forward or backwards and still open. Is there any easy way to secure this? I dont have an option to attach pictures atm sorry. Any help is appreciated

Can you not put a padlock on the drop bolt?

That would be ideal i just have nothing to secure the padlock to. I have pictures just cant seem to upload them. I think I may need some kind of bracket the drop bolt slots into then I can padlock it

Can you drill and tap a hole in the drop bolt and screw a bolt into it?

    How tall are the gates.
Would something as simple as a wire loop or bungee cord restraining the drop bolt suffice?

I could be wrong, but I think the OP is looking at this from a security point of view, rather than something to stop the gate from opening by itself.

@OP really your only option is to fix something to the gate that you can use to lock the drop bolt.
You can either weld or screw this to the gate frame, but it might just be easier to replace the existing bolt with a lockable one..

Are you wanting it secured from the outside only or from both sides?

    That is the key question.
If from the inside a piece of box section dropped into 4 U shaped brackets fixed to gate

I think that picture you have attached would be my best option. Any idea where I would pick this up or would all local hardware stores have products like this? Thanks

basically I am looking to secure it so nobody can jump over the gate and pull the drop bolt up and release both gates ( this has happened before ). With all the dog theft at the moment I am just trying to make things secure as possible. Thank you

Unable to post pictures but if you Google ' Hasp & Staple' or perhaps Hasp Lock - it will show you a simple solution to your problem. The hasp goes on one gate and the staple on the other - locked with a padlock

That only works from the inside though, you can't secure the gate from the outside.

OP you will get them in most places, b&q have them, just Google lockable drop bolt.

You are correct I would like to secure from both sides. I had thought of the other option but ruled it out. Lockable drop bolt seems to be ideal for what I am after thanks so much for your help

Weld or bolt thich plate on left hand gate (one with lock).
This plate should be positioned just over the drop bar.
Therefore in order to lift the drop bar you have to open the left hand gate, plate moves out of way, lift drop bar
