Really? Weird comment, I remember he said Muhammad Ali fought there and that would be a reason…which seemed a bit of a stretch for a reason.

Financially it seems better to do it in the small specialised venue for the same profit in the one off case.

I suppose the draw of Croke Park is that it will hopefully create future markets that will make the extra hassle for the same profit worthwhile.

Culturally it puts Katie Taylor in a unique position in Irish sporting history.

Off the wall stuff about Taylor fighting in Croker.

    It's a one off event.

Even the pedestrian barrier rental (erect and take down) for 1 night would make make ones eye's water.

One offs are way too expensive for commercially driven enterprises for Croker.

I'm surprised SC didn't even do a cursory glance at the maths of the notion.

Crap, I thought Friday night was doors 7:30 show 8:30-ish but no it's doors 6:30 show 7:30 sharp.

Very early for getting there after work and the Stadium isn't great for public transport either.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Ken really struggles to admit when he’s wrong. Kenny and now Onana for De Gea.

The reality is Onana has been calamitous and United would have been better off sticking with De Gea this season and seeing if the Turkish lad they picked up to back-up Onana was up to anything when he settled in. In a team that’s in so little control of games there’s no question that De Gea is a better fit when you’re letting a comical number of shots fly at the goal. The obsession with constantly playing out from the back seems to have only made United’s ill-fitting defence even less coherent.

Between Antony, Casemiro, Mount and Onana, Ten Hag has wasted a prodigious amount of money on turkeys in 12 months even by United standards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,198 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Much like the way some people keep shïteing on about Mick when talking about Kenny, De Gea is demonstrably not the solution either. The solution is a keeper that's better than both. De Gea absolutely needed to be upgraded upon, they just choose badly. There's always a strange desire in some quarters to look back instead of looking forward, which is particularly mad when 'back' in many cases wasn't good enough either.

I dont think many would agree that keeping DDG was the right move. Mega wages for someone who doesn't suit ETHs style, letting him go was the right decision. I agree with Ken on that.

Onana may or may not end up being the right keeper for United. It's half a season, the jury is still out.

The show was a "good player, but not a great player". Was hoping Sam could give us a tune at the end, does he have a good singing voice? 😀

Auditorium - just about OK. Lots of people had a hard time finding their seats though and getting phone torches out in the almost non-existent house lighting to try to find the little labels. Tiering was a low angle so initially it seemed I would have a great view of the back of a tall guy's head, but it turned out he was in the wrong seat and was replaced by a shortarse...

Bar - staff did their best but it was chaos, a lot of punters went home thirsty with money in their pockets they'd rather have spent. You'd think a venue would see the revenue potential lost here. The space available was just about adequate but there was zero organization.

Toilets - disaster. Well, my wife thought it was great as there seemed to be only about five females there 😁 but ffs the gents was inadequate for a crowd of 200 never mind 2000.

I know the Stadium is a historic venue etc etc. but it's totally inadequate by modern standards. Thin Lizzy, Horslips, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, etc. etc. only played there in the 1970s because Dublin was completely shít for venues and this was a well justified complaint even into the early 00s long after these acts finished.

Even a well managed old venue like the Olympia is, today, far better for getting in/out and accessing toilets and bars. Really the best thing that can be done with the National Stadium is knock it flat and start again.

I hope they never go back there. I paid €40+ to stare at the back of Eoins head in a very uncomfortable seat.

The bar and toilets were a joke.

Big Sam never really got the crowd inside. Hard to see that podcast ever going out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,849 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

There was some booing at one point from a few which seemed completely arsey. But yeah it's a venue I'll make sure to avoid from now on no matter who or what is there

Didn't exactly help that to get there we took bus - Luas - another Luas - another bus. At least all within the €2 fare. Going home we got a bus into city centre and one more home which was grand. There are theoretically more direct buses but who in their right mind is going to put their hopes on a once every 45 mins / 1 hour service with all the cancellations going on with driver shortages.

Couldn't believe how bad the toilets were and TBH I'm really not sure how the Stadium has a fire certificate. Took ages for people to get out when it was over, an emergency didn't bear thinking about.

What you've described there in relation to public transport was a major factor in why I didn't bother getting a ticket.

Board Gais Energy Theatre is a lovely venue and is fairly easily accessible by Luas. Was there for Off Menu and was very impressed by the place. That'd suit them for larger shows

    Who were the guests?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,849 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    No idea.

Guests were Brian Kerr, some boxer I'd never heard of who went on the piss in New York, and Sam Allardyce.

Well anywhere else really 😁 modern venues are easy to get in and out of and get to the bar and get to the toilet!!! The last two mean that they make a lot more money but punters are happy to spend it, they want a good night out and a few beers. The Stadium is a complete dump, yeah it had a history but its time is gone.

National Stadium is a fairly shite venue alright, wasn't at SC but at a gig. Jacks was tiny and bar was hidden away and cans only.

Olympia isn't much better, was upstairs there and your knees are pressed up again the row in front. Zero room.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭The Davestator

I've often thought that toilets should be dynamic in venues so when the crowd is dominated by one gender, they can simply move an internal divider and give more space. Queues in Bord Gais can be terrible too depending on the crowd. I was there for Dirty Dancing and it was mainly women and their queue was massive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,086 ✭✭✭bren2001

    Or just have unisex bathrooms.

One large bathroom for cubicles. One large bathroom with just urinals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,621 ✭✭✭atilladehun

Been to gigs in France where the women just take over the cubicles in all the toilets.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,618 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Looking forward to the Big Sam interview, curious to see what he said to piss the crowd off. I'm guessing it's about the national team

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,786 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

I'd say it was something Brexit-related or referring to us as British.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,086 ✭✭✭bren2001

    It was neither.

He just came across as arrogant and a little racist talking about glass ceilings for English managers. You'll see on Wednesday when the pod is released.

A fairly poor year for football books. I've started Liam Brady's but it's not great so far. Probably doesn't help that I find myself reading it in the voice of Apres Match Liam Brady in my head when it gets tedious!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,618 ✭✭✭✭siblers

I thought Murph's book was excellent

Has anyone read The Grass Ceiling? Might give it a go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭JKerova1

Yeah I read it and thought it was only okay, a bit like Martin O'Neill's book. It was funny listening to Dunphy on his podcast describing it as 'one of the best sports books ever written'!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭Dante

The venue was absolutely terrible alright, just about everything that could make a venue bad was covered.

I found Sam very disappointing as a guest to be honest, very uninspiring and low-effort as if he was just phoning it in. It created an awkward atmosphere and drained the energy from the room.

Enjoyed Brian Kerr and the boxer they had on.

They really sold Eimear's book, probably will give it a read.

Carl Frampton's seems to have golden cleric vibes, it was the only book they were negative about though.

I skipped through the Big Sam interview because listening to it fully would be like being stuck with the world’s most obnoxious taxi driver for 45 minutes - but from what I did hear it didn’t seem that the crowd was as negative towards him as I had been led to expect both from here and Monday’s pod. It seemed that people were more bored than angry.

Need to get Dunphy on the telly again for a once off special to shoot this down, with the glasses on so we know he's serious.

It’s pretty rich that big Sam is getting labelled a racist for thinking almost all club owners not being English is a problem or strange. I guess the German clubs or Barcelona or Bohs are all racist too for relying on a member ship model rather than being owned by a hedge fund or being a sport washing project.

Nice selective memory there in order to bend the truth to suit your argument 👍

  • Registered Users Posts: 369 ✭✭Battery Kinzie

It's more the way he says it. Almost spitting out the word 'foreigners'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

He came across as lazy and arrogant and I thought Ken and Eoin could have challenged him more about English managers not getting a job. English managers don’t get many jobs because when they do they are often terrible; Gerrard & Lampard.

Potter and o’Neill were promoted quite quickly when they showed promise. Ryan Mason was given a chance.

Sam has no real reason to feel aggrieved about his own treatment. Yet he clearly does.

but labeling him racist is OTT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,478 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Second Captains often make reference to the time that Eamon Dunphy reviewed Joe Schmidt's autobiography and criticised it because it didn't have an index

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,086 ✭✭✭bren2001

I didn't call him racist. I said he came across a little racist. That's quite different.

Slightly xenophobic might be a better term.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

If someone called me quite racist or racist I wouldnt like either much at all personally. The quite wouldn’t mean much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,086 ✭✭✭bren2001

I don't really care if i annoyed Big Sam or not. It doesn't keep me up at night.

You said it was OTT to call him racist. I didn't call him racist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,618 ✭✭✭✭siblers

Didn't pick up the negativity from the crowd that they referenced in the Podcast on Monday , he just came across bitter and somewhat ignorant, which is no surprise as that's how he usually comes across.

The bit about Limerick was kinda interesting but was a fairly dull interview overall.

The egomaniacs bit was good though.

I wasn't at the show and haven't listened to the recording of Big Sam yet. But I would think bitter, ignorant and a little bit racist would sum him up perfectly. Worth the gamble as a guest, probably should have given him a pint of wine to loosen him up.
