I have written 0 BD-R or BD-REs in that time.

They're virtually useless. USB keys are nearly at the same price per gig as BD-RE now!

Google the part number - but realistically only units from the first few years are - or + specific; and they usually have a build date on them. CD/DVD drives and monitors are the only parts that nearly always have a date for whatever reason.

I would be utterly astounded if it isn't also a CD reader at the very, very least and probably a -RW at that.

I think i got a fad of burning discs for movies long ago and how the hdd has taken over in size.

It specifically says its a CD-RW in multiple places.

Oh I agree you're better off with USBs n' such but if OP needs to be burning and using discs I thought they might as well go all the way.
