Am heading down to kilrush to visit scattery island. I'm looking for a hotel to stay in? And I'm wondering what's the best way to drive there from dublin? Any advice in this matter will be great appreciated. Also any other places of interest to visit while in and around kilrush.

Head for Limerick, then into Ennis and onto Kilrush. Take a spin out around Loop Head while you are there.

Van de Leur walled garden is a nice way to while away an hour or two. http://www.vandeleurwalledgarden.ie/

Entrance is free. If you enjoy walking, there are a few walks through Coillte lands on site. I think they have two marked 3-km routes.

I visited Scattery Island last Saturday (and the above) and it was a very enjoyable trip and a memorable day. Enjoy!

If you go out to Loop Head , you might like to give a few minutes to the “Little Ark” in Kilbaha.

The Vandaleurs weren’t exactly model landlords - you may have seen this famous image down the years .

There are no hotels in Kilrush. The nearest are in Kilkee or if you prefer a 5 star then Trump Hotel in Doonbeg is equidistance.

Scattery Island is so lovely to visit. Bring a packed lunch I’d spending the day as there is nothing only a toilet out there.

Dolphin watching is available from Kilrush- Carrigaholts Dolphinwatch boat isn’t going this year & personally I think it’s the best one. Check out Shannon Sea safari on FB Luke is doing trips & is highly knowledgable.

Vandeleur Gardens are beautiful & there are some lovely wood walks too.

West Coast Aqua Park is in Kilrush & is great fun.

The Cliff drive & walk in Kilkee is far superior to Moher & free. There is an amazing cliff walk & further on you can drive out and follow sea along the cliff drive.

Scattery is an absolute must for a visit if you are around Kilrush, I know the OPW guide, John, who does the tour, he great at it , and is actually from the same place St Senan was born. It still surprises me how few Clare people know anything about the place or even care. And the Vandeleur gardens worth the visit too.

I'll second that. I finally made it over to Scattery for the first time a few weeks ago. John is an excellent guide and provided loads of very interesting info. It's worth taking the longer stay as the walk out to the Napoleonic era fort is well worth it. Full marks also to the boat company.
