    Fun Facts

    Salt N Pepa Push It
This song hit number one in three countries and became a top 10 or top 20 hit in various countries. It was written by the group's producer/svengali Hurby Azor (Hurby Luv Bug). He can be seen in the music video performing backing vocals and playing keyboard. Azor also wrote the trio's other big hit, "Let's Talk About Sex."

Hurby Azor shares writing credits on this track with The Kinks frontman and main songwriter Ray Davies, as the opening lyrics to The Kinks third single You Really Got Me are used towards the end of "Push It."

The song has been remixed and sampled frequently. Most notably, Timbaland sampled the distinctive synthesizer riff on his 2007 hit single "The Way I Are." Destiny's Child also sampled the track on "Nasty Girl" from the 2001 album Survivor. Elements of the song also appeared in the 1998 Garbage track of the same name.

Salt-N-Pepa hated this song, as they thought it undermined their rap credibility and didn't have any lyrical direction they could support. They didn't think much of it though, as it was considered just a throwaway cut. Little did they know it would become their most popular song. Salt-N-Pepa appear in a 2014 commercial for Geico insurance where they spoof this song, telling various people to "push it" in literal situations: an elevator button, a lawn mower, even a birthing class (for the "baby baby" parts).

Their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious sold more than 1 million copies worldwide, making them the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum-status. Their fourth album Very Necessary sold over 7 million copies worldwide (5 million in the U.S.), making it the highest-selling album by a female rap act in history.

Salt-N-Pepa have sold over 15 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling rap acts of all time, male or female. The group has been nominated for a Grammy Award several times. The trio won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for their song "None of Your Business", making them one of the first female rap acts to win a Grammy Award, along with Queen Latifah, who won during the same year. Their success in rap and hip-hop culture has earned them the honorific title "The First Ladies of Rap and Hip Hop".

Nas feat. Lauryn Hill If I Ruled The World
This song is a reworking of Kurtis Blow's old-school rap classic "If I Ruled The World." Lauryn Hill was 21 years old when she recorded it. Nas told Rolling Stone magazine about their collaboration: "When Lauryn Hill came to mind, it was just right on time. It's funny, because when we released the record, people didn't know it was Lauryn Hill, because I guess we just white-labeled it at first and didn't want anybody to know - anticipation for my second album was so great, we didn't want any distractions from people to keep them from listening to me. At that point, the Fugees album had just come out and blew up, so we left her name off of it, and for about two to three weeks, by the time we let people know who was on the record, it was already taking off. So when they found out it was her, forget about it, man. Forget about it."

The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas has released twelve studio albums since 1994, with seven of them certified platinum and multi-platinum in the US.In 2006, MTV ranked Nas fifth on their list of "The Greatest MCs of All Time". In 2012, The Source ranked him second on their list of the "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time". In 2013, Nas was ranked 4th on MTV's "Hottest MCs in the Game" list. About.com ranked him first on their list of the "50 Greatest MCs of All Time" in 2014, and a year later, Nas was featured on the "10 Best Rappers of All Time" list by Billboard.

    My votes in bold.

Bob Marley No Woman No Cry v Billy Ocean When The Going Gets Tough - Lovely "slow set" song with a slow reggae groove.

Sun House Death Letter Blues v Pharrell Williams Happy - As the song suggests, this is a very cheerful tune! It's pleasant listening/ Was ternpted to go for the other one.

Sam & Dave Soul Man v The Dells Oh What A Night - Classic upbeat peice of soul.

Mary J. Blige Family Affair v Chubby Checker The Twist - Nice piece of old-fashioned rock and roll mixed with soul that makes you want to dance.
