The song has become a popular anthem for the city of Chicago despite ambiguity in Johnson's original lyrics. Numerous artists have interpreted the song in a variety of styles. Five of Chicago's professional sports teams have played the song at their games in one form or another.

"Sweet Home Chicago" is a popular blues standard for professional and semi-professional musicians and numerous artists have recorded it in a variety of styles. Steve LaVere, the manager of Johnson's recording legacy, commented, "It's like 'When the Saints Go Marching In' to the blues crowd".

De La Soul is an American hip hop trio formed in 1988 in the Amityville area of Long Island, New York.
