Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,

I am looking for a bit of advice on stripped hing screws -

I need to take the door off fill the stripped holes and re-screw in the hinge bolts / screws

But what method should I use to fill the hole ?
Would match sticks glued in be enough ? Is there a chemical filler I could use and drive the screws in that would be stronger ?

The doors are large - 1 of 4 bi folding 8ft doors, so heavy too.

Attached are the pics of the hinge thats stripped.

    Thanks

Drill and glue in a dowel, or dowels?

Which glue would one use, in that situation? Just curious :)

I've used sawdust mixed with epoxy resin in this situation previously to great effect. However standard pva wood glue should work fine, depending on the size of the hole.
I feel that sawdust is likely to give a more complete fill of the hole & is certainly easier to sand flush prior to drilling your pilot hole.
Pack it in as well as possible with a screwdriver or similar before leaving it to dry.

Is it the frame that's stripped or the door?

Actually given it looks like an external door I'd go with the epoxy.

I think the glued dowel would be the best suggestion if you have the room. Cascamite glue would be my choice as it's marine standard and there's nothing to match it.

thanks folks - I will look into Cascamite although the dowel glue was my first thought

Epoxy is messy to clean up, hard to sand and nasty to work with (you can acquire a skin sensitivity to it, so gloves are critical).

I'd use a sandable wood glue like Titebond II or III (III is better if exposed, but more expensive).

Cascamite probably fine although I'm not sure what it's like to sand. The only downside with Cascamite is that it takes long to harden and has a shorter shelf life once opened.

do you mean titebond with dowels or with sawdust ?

Where do you get these in Dublin ? B & Q maybe ?

    Either.

Dowels can be got from most builders providers in various diameters. Obvs sawdust you can make yourself.

Glue I usually order from the UK but any sandable exterior wood glue should be fine e.g.

Oh and a little flush cut saw is handy to have.

(poor reviews due to problems finding replacement blades)
