Enjoyable watch between Maccabi and Salzburg. Maccabi did well for a team missing 9 players but Salzburg should have scored more than two goals. Maccabi also had some other good chances as Salzburg's defending was surprisingly lax at times. There was 20 shots on target in the match according to the stats on Uefa.com.

Ugh, that was one of the worse things about Giles. He was excellent at discussing and analyzing what happened during a match but before a match unless it was one of the big English teams or Ireland he was pointless.

Instead we had Kenny Cunningham and Alan Cawley who did research before the match on the two teams and were well able to discuss and highlight the key players on both sides. Offered an informed discussion on the Red Bull model between Leipzig, Salzburg and Liefering (except for Alan saying that the original Austria Salzburg fans would be happy with how things have gone since the takeover, lets just say that wouldn't go down to well with the Austria Salzburg fans). The Half-time and Full-time analysis was also very enjoyable. I'd be a fan of both of them getting more matches.

To do with the days that teams play in. Like as Real Madrid games are Tuesday Barcelona can only be in groups for Wednesday games

Easier way to say is teams are tv paired in there country, so they play alternative days

Liverpool and United are paired for TV so once Liverpool went into Group D United had to go into the other side of the draw

    Which clubs are paired?
To ensure that paired clubs from the same country play on separate days where possible, the eight groups will be distinguished by colour: Groups A to D will be red and Groups E to H will be blue. When a paired club is drawn, for example, in one of the red groups (A, B, C or D), the other paired club – once it has been drawn – will automatically be assigned to one of the four blue groups (E, F, G or H). The pairings are as follows:

    A Bayern & Dortmund
B Sevilla & Atlético de Madrid
    C Real Madrid & Barcelona
    D Liverpool & Man. United
    E Juventus & Inter
    F Paris & Marseille
    G Zenit & Lokomotiv
    H Man. City & Chelsea
    I Shakhtar & Dynamo Kyiv
    J RB Leipzig & Mönchengladbach
    K Lazio & Atalanta

Chelsea and City with very favourable draws so far. Liverpool with though enough ties. United will definitely be in for a fight to qualify.

Really think that Liverpool draw favours them. Atalanta and Ajax both attacking sides from what I recall can see Liverpool just pick them apart but definitely not as easy as it could have been.

I just meant they should be tough games but Liverpool should beat them but you never know. Both Ajax and Atalanta have had good CL runs lately.

Think Atalanta might be a tougher game than Ajax, don’t think Ajax are that great this season, lost a few key players as well.

Marseille with Porto, Man City and Olympiakos. They'll probably get 15 points from that lot unless Pep goes quite mad.

    Who I'd fancy to qualify:
Group A: Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Salzburg, Lokomotiv Moscow.
Group B: Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter, Monchengladbach.
Group C: Porto, Manchester City, Olympiakos, Marseille.
    Group D:Liverpool, Ajax, Atalanta, Midtjylland.
Group E: Sevilla, Chelsea, Krasnodar, Rennes.
Group F: Zenit, Dortmund, Lazio, Club Brugge.
Group G: Juventus, Barcelona, Dynamo Kyiv, Ferencvaros.
Group H: PSG, Manchester United, RB Leipzig, Istanbul Basaksehir.

I wouldn't anticipate too many surprises. I think United have got a tricky group but Leipzig without Werner should lack an edge as they did in the knockout rounds a few weeks ago. I think Group C is the hardest one to call. I expect City to top it but reckon it could be a tight battle as to who joins them. AVB going back to Porto will be fun. Disappointed Rennes got a tough draw as they've been quietly assembling a good squad, but can't see them qualifying ahead of Sevilla and Chelsea. Mendy will enjoy going back there. Think Liverpool will top their group, Ajax and Atalanta should have a good tussle for second place. Ronaldo and Messi will be box office.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭kksaints

    Group A
Bayern and Athletico should go through although it might be tighter for Athletico. Salzburg have lost a good few of the big players from last year and while they have talented replacements they probably won't be up to the level necessary to qualify for the next round. Lokomotiva did ok last year in the group stage but lost to Athletico twice and I can't see that changing this season.
    Group B
Real should go through in 1st but the second spot could be a tight battle. It should be Inter but they have a habit of messing up the CL group stages. They did beat Shakhter 5-0 in the Europa League in August so they should be stronger, Monchengladbach are no mugs though and it's hard to have a massive amount of faith in Inter.
    Group C
City always seem to get comfortable enough group stage draws and this wouldn't appear to be an exception. Interesting battle for second though with all teams should be of a similarish level although Porto might be strong enough to claim second.
    Group D
Could be some spectacular matches in this group. Liverpool should finish 1st and their matches against Atalanta will be fantastic to watch. Ajax have lost more players this season and Atalanta have strengthened so I feel Atalanta should finish second. Midtjylland will be the minnows of the group.
    Group E
Sevilla and Chelsea should qualify comfortably. The lower French and Russian qualifiers tend to be weak sides for this level and it's unlikely they'll trouble the big two in the group.
    Group F
Tricky one. Dortmund should be strong enough to finish 1st but the second qualifying spot is definitely up for grabs. Lazio did extremely well for a time last year in Serie A but their form fell off a cliff towards the end of the season and their Europa League form was awful, failing to qualify from a weak group. They also don't have a massive amount of depth to their squad. Zenit have some interesting players but their own recent European form hasn't been inspiring. Keep an eye out for Azmoun an Iranian international, he's scored a fair amount of goals for them and looks talented. Brugge drew against Madrid last season and finished third in their group, so won't be push overs either. I'd guess that Lazio should finish 2nd but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.
    Group G
The Juventus vs Barcelona matches should be fun and will decide the group winner. Kyiv and Ferencvaros are way off the level of their level.
    Group H
Not the easiest draw for United. PSG would be stronger than them and Leipzig despite losing Werner are a strong side. Basaksehir would be weaker than the other three but they did well in the Europa League last season so would be unwise to take lightly. PSG should finish first and United if they play to their best should finish second but they can't slip up or Leipzig will take advantage.

Don't find Juve exciting to watch without Ronaldo. Morata in attack doesn't help. Maybe Chiesa can do something special.

Dzyuba and Azmoun are usually worth a watch for Zenit.

Zenit disappointing so far. Lovren with a header from a corner about as close as they came. Brugge had the better of it and Vanaken looks a good threat from midfield. He's come the closest to scoring.

Morata scores for Juve. Terrible start to the half for Kiev.

Just seen the United line-up. I fear a drubbing tonight. Surprised Mendy made it for Chelsea.

Brugge have taken the lead. Dennis with the goal.

    Screamer from Lovren

Zenit equaliser. Lovren with a belter of a strike that comes back off the post against the keeper and goes in. Good game, this half. Could go either way.

Morata puts the Juve result to bed with a second.
