Many companies distribute from Europe so you don't pay taxes
Amazon UK charges uk tax it about 21%

Once the seller sells over the Irish VAT registration limit to Ireland. Most big retailers will but I've dealt with small time specialists that don't. They charge their domestic VAT

There are so many products that we could, and should, be producing here ourselves.

That's the "Guaranteed Irish" approach of 40+ years ago.

It was a failure, and we were still a low-wage economy then. You can forget about low-value manufacturing in Ireland.

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

    The supplier was Gearbest.
It said on the receipt and on the package that it was shipped from The Netherlands.

They broke their contract with you to supply a VAT/duty-paid item to you. You should have rejected the package and got a refund. Did you get any satisfaction from them - two chances I reckon once you accepted delivery.

It failed because companies decided to go for cheaper options like China and Poland. There was a huge amount of manufacturing done here paying fairly good money. Well spread out too, Shannon, Galway, Wexford, West Cork, the Midlands. Then "we" decided that service industries i.e. call centres were the way forward, despite countries like India starting on them. Good old Mary Harney sold us that nugget, i believe. No way we could ever match the low cost base of China and others.

Most of Vat and customs duties get handed over to the EU to fund it, so it's not as if the Irish exchequer will see much benefit to me

Yeah...its not like the EU has benefitted Ireland at all and we get nothing back

This move is the right move, it'll help reduce the country and the EU being filled with cheap tat much of which is of very questionable quality and safety.

ALDI and LIDL are the biggest landfill generators in this country.

I hope they don't tax drugs they hide in containers . Importers will not pay vat until it gets sold to a customer

Last I saw Dunnes, Supervalue and Tesco had top spots in Ireland above Aldi and Lidi so I think your comments is fairly inaccurate.

Clearly the supermarkets that sell the most result in the most packaging etc going into bins.

The middle aisle items in Lidl/Aldi are of decent quality and often come with lengthy warranties - the exact opposite the built to be binned dreck that makes up the majority of Wish/Aliexpress/Gearbest etc etc.

Impulse purchasers are at their own fault.

and a lot of that privately imported stuff doesn't meet European safety standards for chemicals, electrical safety, toy safety. Fake CE marks.

Beware of buying Christmas tree lights from online marketplaces - you could be purchasing a fire hazard, says consumer group Which?

Six out of 13 sets of lights bought by Which? from online marketplace sellers failed a safety test.

Two of them got so hot during testing that they began to melt, while others could potentially cause electric shocks, Which? said.
