Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I think that’s more a hindsight opinion to have.
The 4 lads picked to cover centre back are all more experienced.
If it wasn’t for the covid issues we wouldn’t even be saying O’Shea should be included.
    His time will come soon.

Plenty were saying he should be picked. He's a Premier League regular that can play anywhere in the back four. Made no sense to leave him out for the likes of Williams.

His set pieces are over rated. No idea why he has a rep for being good.
    He’s no Ian Harte.

I always wondered this myself even a lot of the commentators seem to fall for this myth that Robbie Brady is a set piece expert. In fairness to Stuey Byrne on Newstalk - I believe he just said Brady needs to work on his crossing (1st half). Nearly fell off me chair in shock. Finally someone said it!

When was the last time Brady scored a freekick anyway?
Took a corner Duffy scored from recently was taken by Brady only one I remember recently.
I realised he is injured a lot but still.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I dont think it has been that bad, very few chances but we have played a bit more football than we used to. Wales passed us off the pitch the last two times we played them, if anything we've probably had more of the play today. And that's with literally half the squad missing at the last minute.

Wales have a central midfield duo consisting of a Bristol City player and a chap who is on Man City's youth books. We ought to be doing much better at home against them. The missing players don't affect the midfield aside from Browne, and he's no real loss. It's another case of us making average opponents look good.

Taking things into perspective with all the players missing, it's been fine and nowhere near as bad as a Mick or MON performance.

Even without players missing, it's still 2 distinctively average teams cancelling one another out on the field.

HT stats show we've held 61% possession, 6 shots, 1 on target. Wales haven't been any better with 2 shots, 1 on target.

Not great stuff, but certainly not septic.

We didn't have a shot on target. Wales have had the only shot on target, and might have had a penalty as well.

The missing players line isn't an excuse that's going to wash. Besides, those who hyped up the Slovakia performance weren't interested in the fact they were missing Lobotka, Dubravka and Skriniar.

A premier league regular indeed, Has played all of 4 games.

Jack Byrne deserves minutes in this game, been very stale coming from the centre of midfield.

At least Shane Long has scored a few previously at international level.

    Very clear agenda from some

Molumby losing possession with a ridiculous swivel. Very cheap.

Yep, all 4. You might call him a premier league veteran.

Is there a quota of games that needs to be reached in order to meet the criteria of Premier League regular? Apparently being selected for each game of your promoted side doesn't cut it.

    He should have scored that!

Wouldnt say it makes him a regular though.

    Lovely ball from Stevens there.

Again, has to hit the target.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,561 ✭✭✭Duff

Long needs to be getting that on target.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Hourihane doing very little from open play again. What a poor execution of a basic header for Long. Awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,912 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

4 years since Long scored for Ireland.

Some bunch of strikers we have. Blunt would be an understatement.

Just bloody glance the ball. Why try to power it when it's coming that fast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

That's why you pick Obafemi ahead of Long.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Wales haven't stepped out of 2nd gear today. They've been poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,054 ✭✭✭D.Q

Hendrick is wrecking my head. So slow and clumsy on the ball.

Just turn Duffy into Gary Doherty and play him as center back and center forward.

I would say playing in the league for more than a month to be fair. They’ve also conceded the most goals in the league in those 4 games.

After seeing his debut for Newcastle, I got optimistic about him. For Ireland, he's just taking up space, not sure what he offers.

I'd hook him and bring Byrne on for the last 30. Worth a shot.

    Bit of **** game tbh

    Wales without Bale are average

We're giving it a go at least. No reason why Cullen and Byrne can't be brought on

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Hendrick as bad as he is offers more than the anonymous Hourihane.

God be with the days when Robbie Keane used to be slagged off and underappreciated. When the narrative was he only scored against the weaker teams!

Ireland can't even score against weaker teams now!

Agree completely. Why are we persisting with hendrick and hourihane. They've had two and a half games of muck.

We are definitely passing it better

Time to shake up the midfield for the last 25, this game is there to be won.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 568 ✭✭✭NewMan1982

I don’t think we create enough chances to be critical of the strikers.
It’s not like they are missing 2/3 good chances per game.

Out of the midfield 3 today I’d like Hourihane taken off.

Hendrick is visible and appears to be trying. Molumby is showing energy. He’ll grow into the role.
Hourihane is a little too invisible today.
I’d like McLean replaced too but not sure who we have on the bench.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

Molumby has a first touch that usually leads to it being his last touch.

Jayus Stuart Byrne is getting fierce excited about Ireland's performance on Newstalk.
But looks to me Wales are happy to stand off Ireland? Wales not bothered?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Brady has no pace to be playing out wide.

Not sure what he's watching, serious lack of intensity to the game.

We've been alright given the circumstances but Wales have been poor enough.

    Feels like a friendly IMO.

Jesus just make some subs, the Welsh are barely in second gear and just replaced a Man City U23s player with a Man United U23s player but we've still got lads out their that went to penalities in a play off three days ago.

The Nations League is but a small step up from a friendly. Wales have been so ponderous.

    Vital block from Duffy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,930 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Wtf does Jack Byrne and Cullen have to do to get on

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,246 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Maguire Horgan on Brady and Long off

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Our passing in the Welsh half has been disappointing. Not enough creativity. Let's see if Horgan can improve things.

    Bizarre subs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,760 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Two lads who went even on the original squad getting on ahead of Byrne and Cullen. WTF is going on?

There seems to be this illusion out of nowhere that Wales are a good team, I dont really get it. Theyre not.

I think they are well ahead of Ireland with or without Bale to be honest.
Better structure and plan to the team. Vibrant youth coming through to add to that generation they developed a decade ago.

Plus Wales coasting top of the group. Hardly necessary to extent themselves. If I was Welsh I would be happy enough with the away point without over exertion.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Only just turned it on. Can somebody summarise proceedings? And what’s going on with this COVID-19 case? There’s a positive playing member?

For all Ireland's grunt and having 10 efforts on goal, Wales have the game's solitary effort on target. A sobering statistic but not surprising.
