Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A former Garda I know reckons there was more trouble after the game in 1990. Gardai had to escort/batton the English fans from O'Connell St to the port through places you'd never park your car.

Nasty atmosphere around town that day alright, There was an anti extradition march or soemthing similar as well which added to the mix :)

Apparently it was an off the ball moment where accidentally hit his man with a flailing arm or an leg while running and the opponent made a meal of it. Highlights missed it since it was off the ball. O'Neill said they will be appealing it anyway.

I noticed McClean failed to make their squad again, must have been a bit of a falling out with either the club or management behind the scenes because he played a big part in keeping them up and was excellent for O'Neill when he came in. Didnt he win their Player of the Season award not 2 months ago?

Unless it's Poppy time again and he's been kept out of the squad for reasons.

Yeah hopefully he gets called up in the friendly at Wembley

More chance of it being for England than Ireland mind

Bamford is miles ahead of those players. Not even in the same ball park.

nonsense to say "not in the same ballpark", as if Bamford is some world beater. I think most people will say there's no guarantee Bamford would start for us.

It's academic, as he seems to have no interest.

If Bamford wanted to play for us then he would be playing for us by now, he shouldnt even have to think about it.

If he didnt fancy it when playing in the chship, he'll hardly change his mind when banging them in for a high flying EPL team

I suppose, let him get his 1 or 2 caps for england and that will be that.

Bringing up Bamford is like bringing up Noble, ye on his day he'd have gotten in our team but he isn't irish and doesn't want to.

Saying "look how well he is doing he is far better than anyone in our team" is the equivalent of saying "my blister is bigger than yours", it might be true but no one wins.

And in saying that, a rich vein of form does not mean much long term.

So you and others can say he's "bang average" and wouldn't start for us.

But it's not valid to suggest he seems pretty good and would start for us?

    :D

That simply doesn't make any sense. Your speculation or hypothesis that he is not good enough for us is not more valid than speculation that he is.

He's in form, so was Pukki, so was Bony, so was Benjani, so was Amr Zaki. None of them were world beaters.

He'd get in our team now, but in 6 months time who knows. Do you want me to highlight your posts in 6-18 months time when Parrott, Idah, Robinson or Connolly is in form and Bamford isn't? Do you want to go down this tit for tat road of nonsense and point scoring, or are you going to be the mature lad and realise there is no gain to your nonsense.

He'd start for us now, doesn't mean he's anything special. And saying he'd start for us is the equivalent of saying Callum Wilson, Josh King, Divock Origi or Neal Maupay would play for us. It has absolutely no baring on reality

It's perfectly valid to say he would start for us. He's a decent enough player. He would start and certainly on current form and Mick wanted him. It's a moot point though. There is almost close to nil chance he will ever declare even if his form drops off a cliff he's left it too late I would think

Here is some recent quotes from him.

He could bang in a hat trick against us next month and lads will still be talking about when's he going to switch to us.

There are players like Noble before him and Bamford now who would rather take the chance of 0 caps for England, than 100 for an Ireland team they've no affiliation or affection for.

Those types of players would rather 1 cap as a sub against San Marino than represent the country of a grandparent that could've left Ireland 50+ years ago.

Coleman out today for Everton as expected. No Smallbone or Obafemi in the Southampton squad today not sure if either of those are injury related. Shane Long on the bench.

Another poor display by Duffy for Celtic today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

From the initial teamsheet, looks like Hendrick might be playing in the deeper lying two for Newcastle today, which is good. If he's to have any future with the Irish team, that's the only position he's a viable option - just slows things down and makes things disjointed when he's the furthest forward midfielder.

With regards Duffy, he's a great fit in a team that is used to sitting back and absorbing pressure, but in a team that is expected to play on the front foot, and which is occasionally going to get caught on the counter, I'd worry he's too much out of his comfort zone to fit that kind of style.

Duffy having an absolute mare at Celtic lately
I was vocal that i thought his move to Celtoc was bad for him seems its been bad for Celtic so far
Fingers crossed he can turns things around again

Yeah, you were the only one saying that.

Tbf, I dunno if it's style or quality of opposition or what that is hurting him at the moment.

He looked good for Ireland at least I thought

Think Mr Nice Guy summed it up above... he's great in a team under pressure, under the cosh, but defending wide open space on the counter is alien to him.

Early days though, and a significant change in style, so hopefully he can learn and adapt over time. If he does, it can only be a good thing for Ireland. And I don't think it's gonna particularly make him any worse at the stuff he's more naturally comfortable with.

Sorry i didnt mean to come across saying i was the only one i certainly was not

Id like to hear Citizens veiw as he was strongly for the move and seems to watch a lot of Celtic so maybe he has a more balanced veiw than just the highlights or lowlights iv seen

As someone who was delighted Duffy came, i think now for the sake of Ireland, Celtic and Duffy himself, best to call it a day. An unmitigated disaster and i take no pleasure in saying that

Or he's just been overrated by Ireland fans cause he scored a few goals and was made look better than what he is in a defensive set up and playing alongside someone like Dunk at Brighton.

But Celtic just look poor lately and Lennon looks far from interesting from some of the camera shots of him on the sideline. Just hope Duffy is mentally strong to not let this get the better of him as 2020 hasn't been his year with his father passing away a few months ago and they seemed very close.

I assume he meant Duffy's loan spell at Celtic, rather than Duffy retiring from football.

was Duffy injured when Aberdeen won their second penalty? he make a $hit challenge for the ball then just gave up, didnt try to get back and defend, then by the time Aberdeen won the penalty which was a good while later, he was lying on the ground. I hope for his sake he was injured, you wouldnt see defending like that in an over 50's 5 a side game.

It’s one of those things. It hasn’t worked out for him as yet. Particularly since the international break he has struggled.

I recall Tony Cascarino signed for Celtic in a big money move at the time by Liam Brady. That was also a disaster for whatever reason and Cascarino went to Chelsea in a swap for Tom Boyd. Cascarino had a largely successful career in the top flight in England but it didn’t work out at Celtic.

Still time for Duffy at Celtic, hopefully he’ll find his form.

Agree with you on that. I absolutely hate the crest we have now. I think it came in 2004. Would love to see us ditch it. Personally I would like to see us go back to something more like the old crest we had with O'Neills.

Agree. If there are smart people in there now they would know a rebrand to disassociate with the past few years would be a good move. New crest some marketing PR about a new era and all that jazz. Anyway I expect it will be the current crest because they have no money.

I agree a new crest could be part of a whole new PR campaign that this is the new positive forward thinking FAI not the corrupt incompetent one from before. Unfortunately your probably right it will be same as usual most likely.

I’ve never seen the current jersey up close but I thought it seemed decent. I like the all green style too. Much better than white shorts.
