    hi all

just wondering does anyone know what the process is for electing the TUI school rep .

Is there any advice from existing reps as to how much work is involved and is there any allowance for the role:rolleyes:?

Im not sure but whenever I hear the teachers union people on the radio the focus is about hard worked teachers and worrying about the children getting a fair education, they never mention if their job is a handy number for a decent chunk of change, it would be very interesting to find out.

Ballot members for interested parties. Hold election if necessary. Not TUI but ASTi provide training for shop stewards. One day, substitution paid by union.

    No allowances.

If you're serious about the role, you attend branch meetings and report back to your members. Also you distribute ballot papers and raise staff concerns with management.

I assume OP means school rep not working in head office.

Our school changes annually, unless in the middle of a dispute.

If nobody is interested (and usually they aren’t) a member is picked out of a hat. All former reps are not in the hat, so it’s a once in a lifetime job.

The people you see on the TV are rarely serving teachers. Some of them may never have been teachers.

    TUI provides training for reps.
If only one person is interested in the role, their name is submitted to the local Branch in time for the September meeting. If more than one, an election in house is held.

Depending on the profile of your school/centre you could be very busy all year or on various issues. Lots of part time and low contract staff will be more busy than a settled, older staff. VTOS/Further Ed. centre or similar would have other issues. At a minimum attend each branch meeting and report back to the members. I know some schools have a 'holy trinity' of reps who take it in turns to attend meetings and report back. You may be interested in getting more involved at the Branch level and taking on a position (Treasurer/Secretary/Committe member etc.) within the Branch, depending on how big or busy your Branch is.

You would also be responsible for distributing diaries, magazines and ballots to all members associated with your school. They may not all be in your school building as ETB schools often have many outcentres with staff in them. You will bring any new membership applications to the Branch. You may also be the person involved in 'Stage 1' of any grievance.
