Bit late for that and the fact theyre only sorry for getting caught even though I don't know how they expected to get away with it I'll never know. Absolute eijits.

A lot of them probably still operate under the assumption that the news only gets to the peasantry via RTE or the national press (which they have lots of mutually beneficial connections to).

Social media has a LOT of drawbacks as I talked about earlier in another thread, but when used to expose hypocrisy and incompetence like this, it's invaluable.

    It's getting too funny.

Perhaps in a tragicomedy way, but this flagrant disregard for the rules imposed by they themselves is only going to breed complacency or, worse, copycat disregard. This fight against Covid is turning into a race to the bottom and there needs to be more of a reaction than the usual circus of resignation and apology. This is the worst crisis since 1945, real and actual leadership is required.

How many agriculture ministers are FF going to go through? If he is sacked give the post to FG.

He has to resign. If he doesn't he'll be fired which will look worse. FF must be running out of TDs at this stage?

Leo and Mary-Lou are playing the same game and probably a smart one at that. Keep out of the way, let FF make a complete bo***cks of proceedings, sideline themselves and make it a 2-horse race between alternative governments next election between Mary-Lou on the left and Varadkar on the right. That's why Varadkar was throwing shapes online with more outwardly conservative rhetoric than maybe we are used to here the other week (or maybe it was the other day - it's like bloody groundhog day since all this started!).

This government may well be the last roar of a dying wolf for FF, but this event shows that many of them haven't copped onto that yet.

Varadkar can't stay out of the way if it's true FG'ers where at the event. He's screwed also.

So does anyone know the record for number of minsters in a government dept in a year ? Surely the agriculture portfolio is in the hunt given that it'll likely have its third minister in a relatively short period of time.

I bet MM now wishes he was still known as the former future leader of FF

Christ, the covid police are up in arms again.

Berlin bar one day (gardai say no laws or regulations breached), a golf outing the next day.

What is tomorrow's sensationalist hysterical shi1tefest that excites you all?

No government representative available for Prime Time.

    Wow.
Nobody will want to volunteer for a serious bollocking on telly.
It looks like they are running scared.

Should be gone tonight, Martin needs to be proactive, looks like he might be buying time to see what the papers say in the morning and if they go to town on Calleary, Martin, the government or all three.

If his judgement is that shît that he is on a damage limitation warpath over just doing the right thing for the country, it really doesn’t bode greatly for Martin as a leader at this crucial time...

Eight hours ago Martin is saying ...

They want people to reduce the number of social contacts that they have because the numbers have gone up.

“We want to save lives, we want to protect livelihoods.”

He added that the measures announced this week are aimed at ensuring a balance is struck between keeping people at work and keeping community transmission as low as possible.

“The numbers have gone up substantially in the last two weeks compared to a month earlier.

“That’s it. The numbers have gone up. We have to respond.”

Respond....Needs to sack that Calleary chump, an example to colleagues and the public that no... “special occasions” or “I haven’t seen friends for xxxxx” will get you a hall pass be it in government, politics or any of our private lives.

Calleary is still going to be wheeled out tomorrow to say Martin didn't know about it in his (hopefully inevitable) "sorry Taoiseach and thanks for giving me the sack" speech tomorrow.

There were sitting FG senators there and I don't think he nominated any of them. So yeah he can't stand out of the way but he's not Taoiseach now so for good or bad he's not in charge. I'm of the opinion a Taoiseach is responsible for the good and bad his members of governemnt do.

Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer was also at the function according to RTE website. He is quoted as saying it was ' a lapse of judgement".Bollocks.

"Con A Dara" simple must be sacked for this "$ ] [ | T" Show in Conamara ..... I wouldn't give him the opportunity to resign.....

The rest that attended should follow also....... of course..

I find it interesting that all of this is somehow making people nostalgic for "the last government". As if the last government was somehow so wildly different to this one? It's literally the same two parties and the same central players involved, just with the Greens thrown in to add very little.

Dara Calleary taking a lot of flack for this (and rightly so), but plenty of FG politicians there too. Will that be swept under the rug in people's calls for Calleary's heads? What about a prominent RTE broadcaster being there too, rubbing shoulders with FF and FG politicians?

Neither of these parties give a flying fcuk about anyone in this country and I find it amazing that FG - the party that mishandled the nursing homes, accelerated the reopening of the country without implementing any proper plans for how that would happen, and are still very much at the helm of everything going on in the current shambles - are still managing to come out of this squeaky clean in some people's eyes.

Shouldn’t be given the opportunity, statement from Martin... “ not good enough, he’s been sacked, this government leads by example, anyone falling short in that regard at this time, will be removed”...

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,234 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

This is a sensational story and it will lead to the collapse of compliance.

The house parties are back on this weekend.

Absolutely. Even if people were all in with the latest lot, they'll be all saying **** this, party and BBQs before the kids go back to school. NPHET will be raging.

No it was not a restaurant. 10+ people at tables which is not allowed + it breached guidelines of 50 max at an event like this

Fine it was a lapse of judgement, therefore you are not capable and are sacked, goodbye. End of you.

Examples need to be made of every one of them if the government have any hope of getting the public back on side again after this

If they don't there is no going back

Some coincidence that all 81 had a lapse in judgement on the same night

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,738 ✭✭✭Naos

This is not good for FF.
However, I would ask whether any attendee knew the layout of things at the hotel before going there. No doubt if asked the hotel would claim that they were complying with the regulations. So I would distinguish between the organisers and the attendees. Now the attendees should probably have left if they arrived and there were too many, but that is different from organising the event.

    ?

They are morons for attending regardless of how many they thought would be there.

With respect that isn’t the point.

The point is that large get togethers are not recommended. If you are in a position of authority and you recommend to people not to do something it means you shouldn’t do that yourself.

Like Cawley on the foreign holiday.

It doesn’t matter if Berlin was whooping it up the same night as clifden.

The point is that Calleary as a minister set the rules. And then broke them, if not the letter then certainly the spirit.

And for that he should go. After all if Cowen has to go for a traffic offence (for which he was sanctioned) from 4 years ago, why shouldn’t Calleary go for something he did yesterday.

Not fully. SF can't dare comment as they done the same thing a while back at the funeral of an ex IRA man in another state, worse than this in many people's eyes.
