You have still not told me why an elite few should be slected rather than elected by its citizens.

Because the EU is not another government, it is a supranational body. Suggesting commissioners should be elected is a step towards a federal EU as opposed to a supranational body. The EU is a body constituted by its member states who delegate authority to certain people to act in their collective interest.

The Council (in essence the member states) is the most important body for a reason. The member states delegate certain individuals to run the affairs of the EU - akin to a civil service.

The fact that commissioners can not be withdrawn by the member state is a simply practical element as otherwise there would be too much dysfunction. Thankfully all the member states have agreed that this is the best way to work.

I would hold it against anyone being wrong here. It could go either way. There's a lot we don't know, like the inside of Ursula's head!

Lucinda Creighton thinks he will be staying as the Commission as it cannot be told what to do by any country.

I wonder if MM & Leo actually did interfere to save Hogan, because that is what it seems likely will happen. I'd be pretty sure that Leo would know how the Commission is meant to operate.

Martin and Varadkar have nt told the Commission what to do.

They expressed their dissatisfaction at the whole situation and made it clear that the decision was for Boss Lady and Boss Lady alone.

There was also no interference to save him.

Hogan is an embarrassment to the Irish goverment and the EU Commission.

After several earlier exchanges explaining the same thing to the same person, I thought I put it very diplomatically.

What Lucinda neglected to comment on was the fact that he has lied through his teeth to VDL too.

She did raise the point that I hadn't thought about, that his run and the Irish Gov's support of it, for the WTO may have an effect on the outcome here.

Fianna Fail were in power when all of this was happening. Hogan was just an opposition TD, so wouldn't have been regarded as a top politician.

He wasn't just an opposition TD, he was an opposition TD who was a spokesperson with a portolio.

And as an elected member of Dáil Éireann he had an obligation to speak out on any dodgy dealings within the state.

But he kept his mouth shut because he was part of the Golden Circle. To hell with the people who elected him and paid his wages and pension.

Hogan is an embarrassment to the Irish goverment and the EU Commission.

Mr Martin said Mr Hogan’s “changing narrative” was a “significant difficulty” for the Government but declined to explicitly state it had lost confidence in the Commissioner or that he should resign.

Mr Martin was speaking amid doubts over Mr Hogan’s future as EU Trade Commissioner over his attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society and movements around Ireland in the days leading up to that event.
“We’ve made very clear our anger and annoyance,” he said. “We’ve made that very clear.”

So, what are they trying to achieve by being angry and annoyed? What do they want Ursula vdl to do about their 'anger and annoyance'?

He spoke a lot of sense if what he said is true about citizens information website.
He didn't do anything wrong in that case
His whole story sounds completely believable to be honest. He also has a very unique role in Europe.

    Watch the interview

Between 2002-11 he was opposition spokesperson for Enterprise, Trade & Employment and then Environmental Spokesperson.

I think Michael Noonan might have been opposition spokesperson for Finance and should have been the person asking questions about Bank regulation.

Fianna Fail were totally responsible for the financial crash. They are the ones who were big on light regulation.

On the webinar he said he wasn't going to resign.
Is he jumping or being pushed?

The end justifies the means, we were better off with him in place.

    Phil Hogan isnt going anywhere.

Apparently he's resigning tonight. I did say I would repost your quote.
No winners here, either our government wouldn't have credibility regards the restrictions in place or the Commission would have none regarding respecting local restrictions and rules as outlined by U.V.D.L . some time ago.
Personally I'm glad to see the arrogant liar fall on his sword.

Why do we think its a bad idea for EU citizens to directly elect EU Commissioners?
The same reason why it wouldn't be a good idea for citizens to direct elect Government Ministers.
    .

    Govement ministers are elected TDS.
    Commissioners are not elected MEPS
I have already suguested that MEPS could stand for election as a Commissioner.

You have no argument to why EU citizens cannot elect the EU commisoin no argument what so ever. The reason being is that you full well know the EU commisoin is a undemocratic unelected selced elite.
