There is also the effect it will have on people who do want to want to obey the instructions or those who do but are tried and fed up.

"If these people can flaunt the rules then why should the rules apply to me?"

Some people followed the rules at extremely low points in their life. This behaviour is a front to ordinary people and those supporting him are disrespecting those that lost so much.

So what does he do then? Where was his indispensable influence on this deal?

He wasn't in charge of the negotiation then, so would not have as much influence has he has now as Trade Commissioner. He was up to his CAP.

He isn't an MEP and he won't be seeking election, so won't be looking for any votes.

You'd have us back as small farmers with a tiny economy and exporting our people like cattle.

Get real, we live in the real world and I and hundreds of thousands of others wouldn't be able to live in Ireland only for MNCs being here.

I'd have us going out of crises instead of deeper in. If it's not working and making things worse, just stop doing it ffs.

    No, you get real!
Never said ban foreign business. You're being a bit of a hyperbolic.
My only point is having Phil 'if you're Irish come into the parlour' Hogan in situ does not automatically mean he's looking out for Miley and Biddy.

MM was a mess on the radio this morning. But his wording suggests he knows more.

    https://www.thejournal.ie/government-apology-phil-hogan-golfgate-5184187-Aug2020/

I believe he was staying in Kildare the night before he went to Galway.

Maybe but if the Taoiseach knows more wouldn't it be could for him to tell everyone rather trying to get Hogan to say it.

The faster this goes away the better for the government.

I don't blame him for the messy interview - he can't actually sack him and he can't explain it properly to us because it is all just ridiculous.

Has the guest list been published?

They all need to be named.

Seán O'Rourke was fair good at raking politicians over the coals on the New at One but I see he deflecting with the whole "thought is was in the guidelines". Now there is a hypocrite.

I heard Dick Spring was at it but I did not see him on the table list.
Possibly at one of the Brady tables.

He has at least 250,000 reasons not to resign.

I didn't know that, but the fact they are his former party colleagues probably explains them supporting him. Also as regards impact, there may be a difference between his been drummed out in disgrace all of a sudden over this vs a more orderly process of him leaving to take up some other big job.
I think we'll just have to watch and wait and see who will be celebrating the fact if he is removed/has to resign. That will tell its own tale.

What difference would thee be between him leaving for another job and leaving in disgrace?

How would that affect negotiations ?

Would the EU team be tormented and upset by taunts from the UK team?

This is all bad for everyone, politicians shooting themselves in the foot and likewise the country doing same by calling for mass resignations. I dont like PH but same can be said for most elitist politicians but they are where they are because they all have the backing of people voting them into office. nothing good will come if PH loses his role as commissioner, its a major role held by an Irishman, of course he will seek to influence Irish interests where possible, it will be a mockery for all concerned if he is forced out

What evidence is there that Hogan has any concern in Irish interests?

I see there are now rumours on Twitter that there was a pre-dinner drinks reception in a different hotel on the evening of golfgate....it really is the gift that just keeps on giving!

  • Registered Users Posts: 974 ✭✭✭Psychiatric Patrick

It's actually quite sickening when you see the politicians blame a 3rd party organisation (Irish Hotels Federation) for the mistake. The restrictions were fresh in their minds and were simple - No events, just wedding allowed. Simple!!!

    I don't understand that either.

How is a wedding an okay event?

I've asked this before - is Covid not not able to spread in the vicinity of true love

This was denied by Noel Grealish. See the Examiner for the article on it.

Hogan must be praying there is some international story to save his skin and turn the attention off him. Terrorist attack, earthquake in a western country, president shot etc... He needs a miracle now to ride this out. Not even his neck is thick enough to get through this otherwise.

I doubt this is playing on the Belgian equivalent of Liveline.

He was not elected AS A MEP.

He is selected by for his position by other unelected people in the commission with the unelected EU president in charge.

They do not stand for election and are not accountable to you, me Irish citizens or any other EU citizen.

    Very likely being discussed elsewhere.

He played on the Tuesday or Wednesday but didn't attend. Enda Kenny did the same.
I was very suprised by that, Enda obviously has half a brain in his head that he can see that it would be absolutely slated in the media if discovered.

I did a bit of digging about the people who were at the dinner.

    Table 1

    Noel Grealish, Galway West Councillor

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/galway-west-result-65-9-vote-for-repeal-including-four-islands-1.3509876
    Racist, Property Mogul, Anti-Repeal

Dara Calleary, former Agriculture Minister briefly, Calleary political dynasty (father was the late Séan)

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-20407947.html
Had Lisa Chambers vote for him in the Dáil, was Junior Finance Minister for part of the crash and tried to blame it on everyone else, looks like Iago from Othello

Phil Hogan, EU Commissioner for Agriculture

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle/arid-20217892.html
F'd up Irish Water, Mercosaur deal, earns about €340k per year before expenses, been dining out on taxpayer money since a decade ago (I especially like the last article, he's down the bottom)

Noel and Bernadette Dempsey, former Minister turned consultant, wife is secretary

    https://www.thejournal.ie/noel-dempsey-fianna-fail-minister-meath-2408215-Oct2015/
Left politics because he made awful decisions that shafted everyone and felt terrible. Now he gives advice about how to make awful decisions that shaft everyone and keeps his wife on the books.

It's just a laundry list of terrible, awful, corrupt, rich, reprehensible pricks.

    Don't believe anything from Farage.

That property tax enforcer, Phil Hogan, couldn’t stand the heat of the Budget…

But he could stand the heat of Qatar. While we were crying into our empty wine glasses, Phil was photographed socialising in a hotel bar. The trip was expected to cost €30,000. That’s enough to reverse the €325 cut to the respite carer’s grant for 92 families.

You must have very strong blinkers to condone this man.

Or possibly he just didn't want to get Covid from one of that shower.

Or possibly just thought the dinner was wrong.

Either way more brains and decency that the lot of them that were stuffing their faces.
