It's not really a big deal, lots of people need to lighten up.

There are few that rise to the top without walking over people, Phil Hogan didn't get where he is today by being nice, he's only trotting after Padraig Flynn and we all know how that ended.
    Necks like jockey's b*llock's.

You would think Pee would've warned Phil about the tough commissioner's gig with three housekeepers, three houses and room for a pony etc. But it's a well paid job.

This is a big deal....the same Sweeney that wined and dined the high court judge that night!

If you read any of the covid threads on Boards you'd know the "commoners" aren't meekly abiding and certainly aren't facing punishment. I wish we did have stronger measures in place to stop people ignoring the rules but we don't.

As far as we can tell from the facts, it's not true that he arrived from a non green list country less than 14 days prior, and he believed the hotel was following guidelines. I have a staycation booked next week. I expect to eat dinner in the hotel, just like many thousands of other people doing similar.

I assume the hotel will be following guidelines, but I also assume I won't be expected to resign from my job in the private sector when I get back if it turns out they did something wrong.

I'd hate Ireland to shoot itself in the foot by losing one of our most successful representatives in Europe to appease baying mobs who don't know what they're talking about.

You're misguided. The 'baying mob' as you call it knows full well what it's talking about. This event is opportunistic. And rightly so. Phili Hogan is the epitome of everything we hate about arrogant, snout in the trough, one rule for them type public representatives, commissioners whatever.
Many people would disagree with you on Hogan's merits.
To borrow a quote: I know his qualities and they are few.

This sack of lard could be tested positive for the Coof, spit in Leo's face live in the dial on TV, and FG would say nothing. Untouchable PIG. They keep pushing us...

Pure begrudgery and jealousy...mixed with a holier than thou sanctimonious cover.

I bet everyone here has disobeyed covid rules on occasion.

Err, No, I just understand what Ethics andStandards in Public life should be and , more fool me, I expect our reps to act in the correct manner.

People like you are the problem in Ireland, for hundreds of years. Take a good look in the mirror.

Covid 19 pcr tests are not perfect, he should have had two negatives with a day in between to be certain if coming from a non green listed country, especially if he did meet with the Taoiseach during this time (did any of the others?).
We could end up with one helluva epidemiological research paper... hopefully not ...I am thinking in particular for the staff at the hotel. (Think Boris episode/we do not need a repeat)

Many, Many times, but I aint making rules and telling people what to do. Edit - Ive broken a lot of laws in my life, restricted substances mainly, But Ive followed COVID guidelines to the letter. This is why Im livid.

If your going to shill for this traitor, you must try harder.

The outpouring of bile is quite something to behold.
Probably Irish Water is in the mix somewhere rather than attending the golf dinner.

I'm sorry now, but the Government don't give a flyig **** about the Covid and restrictions!

We have schools back next week and Norma 'I don't know" Minister for Education actually said that the Governemnt will pay for parents to drive their children to school if not enough buses......why the **** do we need the ****ing buses in the 1st place Norma???

Then 81 of them wine and dine in John Sweeneys hotel, who just happens to be a hotel developer and oil retailer.....oh and charged with fraud.....sits at same table as the newly appointed Judge.

It's backwards this country is going and all the Government are doing are orchestrating the public to fight among themselves about private/public sectos jobs/social gatherings/face mask wearing etc....to avoid the Government being in the limelight

People are bored...and they want to be angry. Phil Hogan went to a golf do.

Hardly a crime. He wont resign, nor should he to appease a baying mob of keyboard warriors.

Looks like our leadership couldn't give a toss about the Corona virus.

Same pricks are probably getting Hard-Ons at the sight of everyone lining up wearing masks and losing their livelihoods.

When we're all picking up the pieces and looking back at the monumental **** up that was bestowed upon us due to what in the future we'll learn to live with along with the common cold, measles and seasonal flu...

Remember this when some numpty tells us we no longer need the masks, we've beaten covid.

Now go forth and enjoy your lives like you did before and the amount of deaths will drop dramatically soon enough.

I've experienced some poor petrified people with common colds and normal sniffles ****ting themselves waiting for a covid test only for it to be a negative...

It's out there, but if it's bad now wait for the flu and cold season at the rate these ****ers are scare mongering us people will be on Zoloft and other antidepressants for fear and anxiety...

Yet you've people we're meant to trust frightening the ****e out of vulnerable people both young and old...

No, don't really think he should resign either. An apology is enough.
He's not really part of the local political system here (and so directly responsible for our covid-19 rules & response) in the same way as some others who attended.

As said, I think the man really, really gets people's goat because of Irish water and the way he behaved when that was being set up. Trying to reach into Irish people's pockets for a new tax (esp. for something like water - shur it falls from the sky so why the f--k do we need to pay!) and they'll be waiting for you in the long grass. That is what's happening with the anger on this thread imo.
