Interesting analysis of what's happening if you've the time...first 15minutes will tell you a lot.

Having recently had the covid test which was so thorough it left me with a slight earache for a couple of days (negative) I can see how old cells could give a false positive, they are basically going where no object has gone before. It makes sense that the reason there are so many asymptomatic cases now is that they had it a couple of months ago.

Saw a report on Sky News about an hour ago about Covid Marshals in the city of York in the UK. I was very surprised to see that neither of the marshals was wearing a face covering, whilst patrolling the city centre. Doubly surprised to see that only a minority of citizens were wearing face coverings. Can't see the story on Sky News web page. Did anybody else see this news report?

Greece are testing arrivals into the country. Says here on this link they’re doing 9000 tests a day at points of entry - https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/greece-conducting-9000-covid-19-tests-each-day-at-its-points-of-entry/

If that’s the case then, at double our population, they mustn’t be doing much testing in the community. I’ve heard of a few cases now of people returning from Greece and testing positive, ACE’s example this evening is just the latest one. I would imagine there’s a lot of cases in Greece amongst the community they’re not catching. Then again, if they’re testing at airports, they must be catching a lot of cases too before they bring it in...

9000 at point of entry is small fry for the numbers entering Greece on a daily basis.

I've looked at Italy. They don't admit to a dramatic rise in cases but here are the numbers in ICU over the past few days:

    5/9/20 121
    6/9/20 133
    7/9/20 142
    8/9/20 143
    9/9/20 150
    10/9/20 164

for comparison, they were at 46 this day last month.

Thanks. Tiny numbers in Italy ICUs too. Good news.

Is there any advice when using canteens. I would prefer to eat lunch outside but we live in Ireland and we have rain alot. But where else can I eat lunch when everybody else is eating lunch with their masks off. I would normally find the quietest spot and sit on my own but is there anything else I can do to avoid getting this from someone who might not know they even have it. I think the work canteen is a huge risk because of face masks coming off. But where's the safest place to eat lunch.

In fairness it's very hard to eat your lunch with a mask on

Numbers which have quadrupled in a month. Not such good news. Yes, the numbers are relatively small. They were small early this year too.

Em, it doesn't rain that much. I'd guess it'll be dry for 90% or more of your lunch breaks. An umbrella should do the job on the days it does rain. So, you can eat outside every day. One less thing to worry about :)

Done marginally better than Leo? While I can't stand Leo, and perhaps it's down to perception, I think he did a far better job at convincing the general public to do what was necessary at the outset.

The duo of MM and SD is an entirely different story.
Not fair to compare then to now.

We were terrified in March. 80,000 dead was being touted as a death toll with some estimates as high as 120,000 dead.

Now we know that it wasn’t anything even close to that and we only have 7 people in ICU in the entire country.

Very different climate now even with the media and NPHET doing their best to scare the sh1t out of the public on a daily basis.

Yeah, know what you mean, but I was thinking more that you could actually sense an element of logic in the decisions made. Very little confidence in MM/SD, perhaps it's the way they tell it!

At your desk while the rest of them are spreading the spores in the canteen?.

    Unless that is not allowed.

Yes. York City centre. I just thought it was a stark contrast to where I was in Limerick city centre today, where there was 90% mask wearing. And I thought you would expect "Covid Marshals" to wear masks.

I'm scratching my head as to why everyone including the government believes so much of the population are going permanently again rush out to pubs from the 21st paying €5-6+ a pint when they full well know that a significant amount of the Vintners will not enforce social distancing in pubs which will be riskier to them than socialising in their houses for a fraction of the cost which they are used to now after 6 months

Cos some people like having a jar in the local and aren't prepared to let the minimal chance of infection stop them. I'm not sure you can say it's riskier than socialising in their houses tbh.
I seriously doubt that reopening the non food pubs that close at 11.30pm will solve the issue of "where do we go next". Home to someone's gaff again I suppose, if nothing else is open. And it's the same thing all over again. I doubt a guard will care if there are six or sixteen in your house. That is the reality.

A sop to the publicans, which is fine, but if NPHET's goal is to keep house parties low, it won't happen IMV.

    It's mad Ted!
They'd have been better off just restoring normal closing than encouraging people to head off to a party afterwards. 11.30pm is too early to be off the premises for a lot of people.

When it's raining outside and you don't want to eat in the canteen, just bring your lunch into the toilet with you. Problem solved.

The weather is only bad if you haven't prepared for it, similar to everything else, if you are more comfortable outside, prepare to be outside.

Before covid, what were the things that worried you every day?

I was lucky enough back in the day to have my own room. Locked the door at 1pm and put a do not disturb sign up outside. Feck the lot of them. They'd never leave you alone if you didn't put down some boundaries. But it was usually the ass lickers who constantly drove me mad. Shoo.

This is the worst case of over thinking I've heard of. First of all there are plenty of things you can do..and surely you must have heard of them. Sit 2 metres away, wash your hands etc. It's simple mate.
If that's not enough eat at your desk, in the car, on the toilet. There are endless possibilities. I find it difficult to think you need to ask an internet forum what to do here?

lol. The cretins having sessions at the minute, used to have them after the nightclubs closed at 3am. They will have them if the pubs close at 11.30, 12.30, 1.30 etc.

So my solution is this: Let the pubs open all bloody night. And give the gardai permission to enter the homes of any dopes blaring music, talking ****e in the early hours in a residential setting tormenting all around them, and leather them with big bloody sticks.

Problem with Leo is he was just too much with a fûcking ear to the moneymen's wallets. I imagine not much would change if you were to reverse rolls.

Why do you feel MM is doing better at this than Leo?

Absolutely, let them booze all night if they want to. But we are a Puritanical Society really.

Doesn't seem to be a problem in other countries.

But realistically that will never happen here.

Can't buy a Marks and Spencer meal deal + wine on my way to work because it is before 10.30am. Rest my case.

That is ridiculous. Just to save us from a few winos in the morning. Honestly.

You might have a point, I was trying to think how to stagger closing times without being unfair, do away with it and hold the license holder responsible if there is a problem, it will stop the problem of everyone arriving out on the street at the same time looking for a party
