Two tough choices, I'll have to go with Samuel L Jackson and Jim Carrey

Bruce Willis ( extremely tight call with Samuel L Jackson)
Tom Hanks he was in so many brilliant wide ranging films and always gave a great performance

    Bruce Willis

Dammit I was hoping these guys would avoid each other. Both my noms. Just prefer Bruce's output a little more, Armageddon being the tipping point as they both appeared in Pulp Fiction and Die Hard 3 (which wasn't great admittedly)

    Tom Hanks

Again, my nomination and it's a 90s Oscar Winner up against a goofball actor. Not to take away from Carrey as you don't win Oscars playing roles like his but that being said he essentially played the same lunatic across a couple of different movies.

Hanks is miles the better actor here, his performance in Philadelphia is often very much forgotten ahead of the more mainstream Forrest Gump.

    Samuel L. Jackson
I like both. Both play essentially the same character all the time, but they do it really well.

I just think SLJ is a little bit cooler.

    Tom Hanks
Has some variety to his roles. Aside from the Truman Show, Jim Carrey doesn't show much range.

Bruce - As Necro says, I just prefer his output more.

    Tom Hanks - Total mismatch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Bruce Willis ; love both, but just think Willis was in more '90s classics and '90s was his peak, whereas Jackson's career is still going strong and some of his best work has been in the 21st Century.

Tom Hanks ; again, love both, but Hanks dominated the '90s, is one of the greatest actors of all-time, and would love to see him win the tournament.

Bruce Willis. There’s a bit more of a authenticity to his characters, even the 5th Element one. He’s quite human. Jackson gets to ham it up a lot but I’m very aware he’s playing these OTT roles.

Tom Hanks. He makes what should be mundane characters and makes them interesting. It’s a gift for sure.

Samuel - if I don’t vote for him he will strike me down with great vengeance.

Tom Hanks - that man could run.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭Reberetta

    Samuel L. Jackson
    Better actor.

    Tom Hanks
    More versatile.

Samuel L Jackson 4 Vs 5 Bruce Willis
Jim Carrey 1 Vs 7 Tom Hanks

SLJ _ He never stops working, and his appearance in a film instantly makes it better. Also he was probably the only actor who could have played John Shaft in the remake.

Tom Hanks - Carrey was the better comedy actor, although Otm had some great comic roles in the 80s, but Otm has it for his 90s drama.

Dagnabbit! I keep missing the boat by mere seconds.

We are talking about the 90s output, but one of these two actors has started releasing films with his name in front of them ie: 'Joe Soap's, Terminal Disaster' or 'Joe Soap's, Hell in a Handbasket'.
It is never a good sign, people who have done it previously include such screen luminaries as Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal :(

Both worthy finalists and in my opinion it's very close, their films are completely different, but, between them their films defined the nineties. Don't really mind which one wins as either would be worthy winners. Bruce was more than just an action star, but, my vote goes to Tom Hanks who just about edges it due to his range of films being more varied and his performances were always first class.

Bruce Willis - I still cry at Armageddon, 90s was his time to shine

Tom Hanks - the comedy man went out all serious, damn impressive

I just checked and realised that I nominated both of the finalists.
Both of them had a great decade.
It's interesting that they started the decade starring together in DePalma's The Bonfire of the Vanities - which I thought was decent enough despite it being a critical and commercial flop.

Tom Hanks 90s films I liked:
Pretty much everything he did in the 90s:
Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail
    Philadelphia
    Forrest Gump
    Apollo 13
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Green Mile
    and the 2 Toy Stories

Bruce Willis 90s films I liked:
Die Hard 2 and Die Hard with a Vengeance
    Death Becomes Her
    12 Monkeys
The Fifth Element (I think I have the DVD somewhere, long overdue for a rewatch)
Armageddon (mostly for its entertainment value)
    The Sixth Sense
Not a fan of Pulp Fiction. Also at the time of release I thought The Siege was really really bad, but when I saw it years later I found it just meh. . .

Either of them would be a worthy winner, although I know who I would like to see lifting it :)
