    I think so

I am based on their T&Cs on 48.ie. It says 6 months

They must've changed it back again, so.

Nasty tactics to push people onto the 12.99 plan.

The "one-time" activation fee is still the slimiest thing i've seen from 48 (three).

I'll stick on my 7.99 plan, thank you very much. At some stage it may not be worth restricting 5G access. Leaves more 4G for the rest of us anyways. 😁

Hey all, is the 48 12.99 plan as good as a 3 plan around Dublin?

Thinking of switching as I used to be paying 20 quid pay as you go with 3 and I can't get past how quickly the credit goes when you have to call someone from another network.

It's a no brainer. 200GB of data, 5000 minutes of calls, 5000 minutes of texts for €13 a month. As long as you're not trying to use premium calls or texts, all good to go.

    This too shall pass.

Just be aware they use different APN like Tesco or virgin so each processes their own data even though signal is all from 3.

In reality I've never noticed a real difference in speeds in Ireland, even when limited to 4G. Abroad on the other hand…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,045 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

ah yeah, I don’t see the need for 5G on my phone tbh. If I have it then great but I’m not paying extra for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭CollyFlower

I'd be worried if they reduced the speed for the customer's on the 7.99 plan.. I use it for all my Internet needs, don't need a broadband provider.

Has anyone been in London recently and had problems with data/roaming on 48?

Was there for a couple of days earlier this week and had calls and texts but couldn't get data at all. Usually I connect to 3 UK but it wouldn't let me, could only connect to O2 UK.

Has anything changed, was in another part of the UK in March and everything was fine on 3 UK.

    Localised problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,558 ✭✭✭✭blade1

Could anyone tell if it's normal to lose internet connection on phone calls?

    Its always happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,958 ✭✭✭✭Mimikyu

Does it drop completely or drop down to 3G/Edge? 48 don’t have VoLTE (calls over 4G) so when a call comes in you drop down to 3G/Edge which is unusable most of the time I find.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,124 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

Probably drops down to edge. Pretty unusable anyway. I'm on 3 and it has done it for years. No idea why it only happens sometimes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,558 ✭✭✭✭blade1

yes drops to edge or whatever H means.

Doesn't matter most of the time but say like the other day I had a missing parcel and was on the phone trying to sort it.

When they asked for the tracking number I couldn't access it with the internet so slow.

Just annoying when I need it in a situation like that.

was wondering if that's normal for all providers?

I know several people who have been up North recently, coverage lost as soon as they crossed the border. Did all the recommended sim tweaks etc. Some managed to get 3G for calls others completely cut off.

Last visit North was mid April and my 48 connected automatically and no problem with data connection or SMS

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭PH0NER

went North with 48 last weekend. My phone didn’t automatically connect to roaming, but when I manually selected O2-UK, all worked great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭beachhead

Next visit will be end of May and will expect the same service as before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭Simi

Was there at the weekend and the switchover on the way up was seamless. Was streaming music so i know it was working the entire time. On the way down it held on to the NI mast for too long, so music stopped for a few minutes but then came back within a few minutes without me doing anything.

I was in Czechia last month and it took longer then my friends to acquire a signal, but did start working eventually. It dropped a few times and I needed to reboot the phone to get it working again, but compared to roaming last year it's been a far better experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,373 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I wonder if the type of phone plays into this? Perhaps a flagship model is "smarter" at recognizing roaming conditions then a mid range. Or iPhones vs Android, I dunno. It's a variable that might be worth taking into consideration.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭beachhead

The UK signal can extend to Junction 18 going south but it does have blank spots after Jct 19.As you said the changeover is seamless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭KildareP

No. Vodafone, Three and Eir will all maintain a data connection when on a call on 4G and 5G and you're using a phone that supports VoLTE.

Data was also maintained on 3G/H when on a call except the 3G bandwidth in most locations has been stripped back to the absolute minimum by all three networks so data is largely unusable regardless of being on a call or not.

Question for anybody with a new 5g SIM

    Does 48 support WiFi calling?

    This too shall pass.

  • Moderators, Regional Midwest Moderators Posts: 11,179 Mod ✭✭✭✭MarkR

    I've a newish SIM, and I don't think it's supported.

Sticking with GoMo so. Thank you.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭PH0NER

I have a brand new SIM and 5G. No WiFi calling on my iPhone 15.

As far as I’m aware, only 3, Vodafone, Eir, and GoMo support WiFi calling. Only Eir and GoMo support WiFi Calling while outside of Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭beachhead

It can depend on your model/make of phone. Can't answer about 48

iPhone 15 is the kind of model you'd expect to support it, to the point that I'd refuse to buy it if it didn't.

I seem to recall that even the regulators are trumpeting WiFi calling as legitimate coverage improvement for mobile networks. I just assumed it's getting rolled out on more networks and that 48 joining the 5g bandwidth would bring it in as well.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭babelfish1990

Some dangerous assumptions there. Eir is the only network in Ireland to fully support WiFi calling, including text messaging and use while roaming. They launched in 2017. Vodafone didn't launch until 2019, and they still don't support text messaging or roaming. Three did a half-baked launch in 2022, but they still don't have approval on the Apple iPhone website - so it may not be working properly, to Apple's satisfaction. WiFi calling has nothing to do with 5G. It requires complex server-side integration to re-route calls and texts over fibre-based broadband, and handset manufacturers need to co-operate by including the server addresses in their handset firmware.

The MVNOs (such as 48) generally do not support WiFi Calling. The exception is GoMo, as they are really just a brand on the Eir network, and all their network features are identical to Eir. There are numerous problems with other MVNOs such as 48 and Post Mobile, which show that the network features on the host networks do not automatically get offered to the MVNO's. It probably suits the main networks to keep some goodies back for their premium customers, and the MVNOs may not want to deal with complex services for customer care.

Im on gomo and the texting via wifi doesn't always work. Anyone else have that issue

    Quick EU Roaming Data question.

On 48 if you use up your data roaming allowance (12GB in my case) is the only option to get more data having to buy the 1GB for €3 top up.

Note that I'm still "in plan" for another few weeks.

You can use some of the data you've put aside from previous months (5GB each time) with no extra charge, provided you have some. I do it every time, it's handy because it's taken out of your 'domestic' allowance but can be used while roaming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭muffinhead

Assuming this is "The Safe" I see there is a 50GB total allowance. Can all of this be used in one go to top up the 10/12GB roaming allowance?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 77,253 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

To be honest, I don't know, I've never had the need to use it all in one go.

Is anybody getting 5G on a €7.99 sim?

I used to get it when they were setting it up, but not any more.

Don't do that , doesn't work, only counts as local data, well didn't for me or my daughters, neither does buying a new sub as it only kicks in as credit for the next month, In my experience once eu data is gone it's gone. I have a lyca mobile sim for this reason. Dual sim phone, 10 euro for 20 or 30 gigs, sign up a day before, got it cause roaming never worked. Does now mind you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 884 ✭✭✭PeterDuggan

48 previously made 5G available for all customers. There may be a case to object to them now selectively degrading this just for legacy customers.
