You only have to look at Matt Hancock to get the answer to NPHET or politicians.

It would be great if everyone could focus on a weekly figure. When we started to come out of lockdown, it was all about trying out measures and then waiting a few weeks to see the effect. But, it's a waste of time. The media in particular will not play along with that, because there will still be an appetite for daily information from some. What annoys me most is the particularly pointless, totals figures. Compare it with cancer stats. Sudden changes in cancer rates would be very newsworthy but nobody would want the main news bulletins to report the ever increasing total number of cancer cases or deaths. It would be ridiculous.

The daily figures keeps us focused on this new virus, in which we still have very little knowledge of, even though serious illnesses such as cancer should be reported on more, we have been dealing with it far longer, and have accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge on it

They don't keep me focused on it, because their value is limited and I don't check them every day anymore.

i disagree with your views on value, but you also have the right to ignore it, and get on with life

Most people don't but as pointed out last night, if they dropped them the first question would be what are they hiding?!

I don't think they can drop them. They have to be published if they are available. I'm thinking the main press conference and report of data should be done weekly. I would tune into that. As I said, it's probably not going to make any difference anyway. The media will publish whatever they want including interviews with people who aren't on NPHET and who are predicting new waves and lockdowns till the cows come home.

maybe you could somewhat disconnect from as many media sources as you can, if its bothering you that much, i think the level of information coming out, is very good, of course theres also gonna be bullsh!t also

I get the sentiment, but some people are anxious about the whole situation and it doesn’t make them an idiot.
We can't mollycoddle everyone who feels anxious.

anxiety issues can be extremely debilitating

I'm sure they can, but the onus in this case must be on the person and not society.
We are in the midst of a pandemic. Just because we report less on it won't help people with anxiety.
Of course if such people have suggestions I am all ears.

Stay indoors, wash your hands, and avoid crowds and you'll be ok.

unfortunately the world of anxiety is far from this simple, we can become deeply overwhelmed by anxiety at times, sometimes finding typical life expectations and activities virtually impossible, leaving the house can sometimes be overwhelming

How can making the numbers weekly help with that ^^^

Instead of hearing daily numbers of 5/6 cases you instead get weekly updates of 50/60 cases.

But most people do, I'm watching out for the new daily figures every single day.

it can have both a negative and positive affect, some seek comfort in more information, and in others, it will exasperate anxiety levels

Why have they stopped reporting recovered cases?

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/ireland/
Graphs like these seem to show inaccurate 'active' cases.

I think we should be reporting:

    Fatalities
    New cases
    Active cases
    Numbers in hospitals
    Numbers in ICU

Simply reporting new cases by day does not reflect the actual situation

No need to worry about me, I'm fine. This is about the most effective way to get the message out to people generally. People who want to fret about the daily ups and downs can do that, but a weekly press conference and detailed update would probably be best for most people imo.

we ve no idea how many the daily updates are negatively impacting, but most i know are not badly impacted by it at all, more interested than anything

Important to know that today's figure is a high of 308, excepting that it's a Tuesday, weekend figures. Sorry to those who cannot unsee the figure.
