    Van Persie - It's different, it's epic, it's amazing.
Ji-Sung Park - fabulous control and finish
Haan - unreal strike, but there are better already through imo

Park , such great composure in such a tight space.

RVP.... iconic goal but its a hit and hope for the best. Nothing technical about it for me.

Haan.... a hit and hope that any decent focused keeper should save. Lucky for him the opposition keeper was ponder if the store still has the shampoo he likes in stock.

    Same votes for me please.
Though I'm not his biggest fan, Van Persie's goal would be a worthy winner of the whole competition.

    Van persie for the uniqueness
    Park
    Haan

    1) Van persie - haven't seen that goal in ages, had forgotten how good it was

    2) Haan - good hit

    3) Park - not really doing it for me

First is Van Persie - It's just an audacious goal. He didn't have to finish it like that. If anyone could have brought that ball under control or finished first time with a volley it would have been Van Persie, but he attempted a header unlike any other header I'd ever seen before or since, chipping the keeper with a header - it's a unique goal.

Ji Sung Park is a second there. Great control, touch and finish. Maybe the finish is a bit unspectacular compared to what preceded it, but it's a high quality goal.

Haan is a great shot from distance, but the other two choices are superior in my opinion.

Im not voting on any of these goals...just enjoying watching them...

Any goal from the italia 90 sticker albums " Golden Goals" hold a special place in my heart...so i love e.g Haans goal, josimar, 'rats beats bats goal' etc etc

Nostalgia is a killer, i cant view goals from modern times as better than the older times because my brain is too fond of them....

    Overall my 2 favourites:

    1. Maradona v england 1986
    2. Carlos Alberto v Italy 1970

Haan - 1978 is the first WC I properly remember, and this has always been one of the highlights for me. If we had 4 nominations each this would have been on my list.

Van Persie - we just don't see enough diving headers any more, and definitely not of this quality.

Park - great control, but I can't help feeling the keeper should have done better

    Robin Van Persie
    Arie Haan
    Sung Park

That concludes the Group Stages. The Knockouts will begin tomorrow and will all be straight up one on one affairs. Hope to see you all there!

What time you starting it at?

    Great stuff Omackeral.

Here's one that, somehow, didn't make it into the top 48 - shame on us!

That last touch is gorgeous. Would’ve got my second vote in most of the match ups.

At the very least we get to watch all of these great goals again Omack

Messi v Nigeria from 2018 was also hard done by not to make the cut:

Amazing control on the thigh and on the run, the second touch to make space and then the powerful finish.

That was a fantastic goal. IIRC he ran the show that day. Nothing like an Argie goal with a coked up Maradona.

Don't think I appreciated the beauty of the control for this goal the first time around!

    Yeah, he's definitely on something.

    Knockout stages commencing at 14:30

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    - As before, matches will last for 30 minutes.

    - In the interest of, well interest, goals from the same group will not face each other in this round. Aside from that caveat, all pairings are random.

    - It's most votes within the time allotted for a victory, with reasons for or against a choice becoming tie-breaker criteria should it be needed.

    The nation holds its breath.

Carlos Alberto (Brazil vs Italy, 1970)

    VS

Siphiwe Tshabalala (South Africa vs Mexico, 2010)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,241 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Suspect I'm on a loser here, but I vote Tshabalala

From the interception there's 6 players, 8 touches, 10 seconds, goal. It's so clean and incisive and fast

Whereas for the Brazil goal there's 78 touches and it takes a few days. It's like it's being played in slo-mo :p
People only love it because he's off screen when the pass is made. That just highlights poor camera work and how much space the defence had left

Plus - home nation in the opening game of the first ever African World Cup. But yes, you have to watch it on mute

Gotta go for Carlos Alberto here I think. Fabulous team move.

I enjoy watching Tshabalala's goal more, but ultimately I'll have to go for Carlos Alberto. I don't think it should advance any further, but it deserves it for the context, and it's a nice finish to be fair.
