Difficult call. Had to get a better angle for that grosso goal and it does look sweet. But pavard just edges it for me, the way he slices it with outside of the foot, spectacular.

    Voting Pavard

Grosso for me, I think the significance shades it for me. Very close contest though.

Pavard for me. An amazing technique. Love the other goal too!

Grosso. The pass from Pirlo, the first time curling strike, the sudden evaporation of tension and the eruption of joy.

    Pavard.

We'll see a million and one of Grosso's goals this season.

    Pavard 3-2 Grosso

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

At the time expiration, it was Pavard leading 3-2. Let's see if we can get a higher voter turnout here next.

Dario Rodriguez (Uruguay vs Denmark, 2002)

    VS

Robin Van Persie (Netherlands vs Spain, 2014)

Van Persie all day, I think for sheer audacity it might be one of my favourite goals ever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,755 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Dario Rodriguez - the ball never touches the ground from the corner.

    Rodriguez all day long.

Two unique goals though; a shame they have to meet this early. But love the heads and volleys

    4-3 Pavard, no?

I 100% know I'm not winning this but to me the Uruguay goal is a better goal the skill of the assister to juggle the ball and lay it off without it dropping for Silva to strike on the volley is just a thing of beauty.

I like the Van Persie goal obviously but just prefer the Silva one.

Van Persie. - pure class, up there with the greatest goals ever

Van Persie, a very unique and very impressive goal.

    Dario Rodriguez

Garcia makes this goal special with the delicate touch and assist from his left foot.

    Rodriguez 4-4 Van Persie

The heads and volleys comment saves it.

    2-1 Rodriguez

Despite getting the player wrong, it's a great reason :P

Time limit of 30 minutes per match. Was 3-2 when it was up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Could be a potential head vs heart tussle coming up. Two last minute offerings. Let's see which way you sway. I'll be watching a film after this is posted so the time limit will be up to yourself to monitor! Each match lasts 30 minutes remember!

Robbie Keane (Ireland vs Germany, 2002)

David Platt (England vs Belgium, 1990)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,755 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

David Platt - the technique is outrageous. Keane's goal isn't a patch on it really.

Robbie Keane. Heart over head but by jaysus I remember exactly where I was when that went in.

Head over heart... David plat goal for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭lassykk

Has to be Robbie Keane for me. I was 16, doing my leaving cert English Paper 2 if I recall correctly and the supervisor let us know when Ireland equalised and a roar went across the hall! Obviously platt's goal is better but the world Cup to me is all about childhood memories and Robbie Keane is a great one

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭Reberetta

    David Platt

Almost a 360 turn for an over the shoulder volley requiring great timing, anticipation, concentration, and direction, delivered in a more important match. The Belgian defender on his right should really have gone after that ball like a terrier and cleared it. If I were Belgian, I'd be disappointed in the defence all round.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,271 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Platt's goal is superb technique. Easy to underrate it.

And yet I'll vote Keane anyway. One of the reasons football stands out over other field sports (especially rugby) is how quickly something can happen. 5 seconds from us bringing the ball out from the back to the net billowing. I think that's even easier to under-rate.

It probably won't get any further, but it deserves to be appreciated (like Shane Long v Germany too) as a goal which makes football better than lots of other sports

Same! No heads up by the supervisor though, had to wait till after the exam to hear. As if the nerves of the LC weren't enough already!

I'm actually gonna abstain from voting on this one. I know Platt's is the better goal, with the better technique, but I can't bring myself to actively vote against Robbie's. It meant too much.

Now i've the "Daydream" song from the Carlsberg ad in my head :o

Robert Keane. Quality route one football.

Platt just swung a leg at a ball hoofed into the box.

    Keane 4-3 Platt

The Green Army marches on. The abstained vote proved crucial perhaps! There are 4 more First Round Knockout bouts to go and we'll get through them tomorrow. Stay safe y'all.

Manuel Negrete (Mexico v Bulgaria, 1986)

    VS

Michael Owen (England vs Argentina, 1998)

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 53,174 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Gotta go for Owen here, it is close mind. Great pass from Becks and then the flick to take it beyond the defender before a great run and finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,736 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Voting Owen. The Mexico goal is something you might try in training. Lucky it worked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Just passed the halfway point here

yeah, Premier League is back today, currently watching Arsenal, so with a 30 minute window to vote we would definitely miss some matches

    Negrete

    Next bout being uploaded momentarily.

Philip Lahm (Germany vs Costa Rica, 2006)

    VS

James Rodriguez (Colombia vs Uruguay, 2014)

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 5,523 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

    2 wonderful goals.
Lahm's shot has the perfect spin and trajectory, hitting the corner of crossbar and post.

But I will vote for James: the way he controls the ball with his chest and then doesn't let it bounce and shoots straight away is brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,690 ✭✭✭✭Skylinehead

Lahm's goal is great, lovely opener to a tournament, even leaves a guy on his arse with no effort.

But James' is obviously better. Chest, bang. Extra points for crossbar. So that.
