The longest stage of this year's Tour de France (and the only one above 200k) sees the riders embark on a three-day trek across the Massif Central. With Sagan's hopes of reclaiming the green jersey seemingly gone, it's difficult to see any scenario where this stage does not go to the breakaway.

    Map

    Profile

    Timetable

    Start: 11:50

    Intermediate sprint: 13:09/13:12/13:16

    Côte de Saint-Martin-Terressus: 14:22/14:29/14:36

    Côte d'Eybouleuf: 14:45/14:53/15:02

Côte de la Croix du Pey: 16:02/16:13/16:26

    Suc au May: 16:22/16:34/16:48

    Finish: 16:57/17:11/17:27

    Climbs

The stage goes from flat to rolling to hilly to mid-mountainous over the course of its length, with the intermediate sprint falling in the first of these parts. Indeed, the first categorised climb comes almost halfway through the stage. 1.6k at 7.9%, the Côte de Saint-Martin-Terressus is hard by cat. 4 standards. The next climb, Côte d'Eybouleuf (cat. 4), is easier, not much trickier than the uncategorised ramps in the next 50k to Treignac.

The final 50k of the stage feature the two main climbs. The former, the Côte de la Croix du Pey, has some good ramps for a cat. 3 of this length, it should separate the wheat from the chaff.

The final climb of the day is the cat. 2 Suc au May, and it's more difficult than the average gradient suggests. There's a short descent near the end and some legitimately hard ramps before it, it would possibly have been hard enough for GC action had it come a little closer to the finish. As it is, there's just over 25k to go, most of it on rolling, often narrow roads.

    Finish

We're in a very rural part of the Limousin and hence the roads aren't the widest. The final 5k are somewhat uphill.

Hard to predict who could win this sort of stage.

I'd expect a big breakaway today with a small selection left to win the stage from it hopefully.

    It looks a breakaway day

Sagan to go all out and try and reclaim as much points as possible today, will look for both the intermediates and the stage win. He is well able to get over most climbs when he goes all out.

DQS will hardly let him go up the road before the intermediate sprint. I'd imagine they will keep a right rein in him until after that and give Sam the chance to defend those points at least.

No break before 51 KMs unless Sagan is in it

    Bora will drill it

Hopefully a much more Interesting day from the off today.

Talk of Sagan going home early if he cant compete for Green.
Wants to prepare for Giro - Contractually?

Read that Bora might try an early breakaway to get to that first intermediate sprint for Sagan.
& that Bora might team up with CCC for that.

Alaphilippe also might give this stage a crack after the breakaway is reeled in.

Well he's contractually obliged to go to the Giro. Skipping the classics. imo this will be his last contract, and he'll move to the US. I get they're professional, so money comes first, but him missing out on Flanders and Roubaix at this stage of his career is ridiculous.

Could see DQS sending the likes of Jungles & Alaphilipe up the road in any break away especially if Sagans in it. Jungles has been quiet so far and used sparingly

I'd love an exciting battle for points but It'll be a lot of work for Bora to keep it together for 50k... We could well end up with a massive break formed in the first 10k that stays away for the day.

Contractually more money in it for him on the Giro this year?
Or maybe i picked it up wrong. Just gets money for winning a green. TdF and if not on to the Giro

This breakaway group is good news for Sam

Would it not be better for Sam if there were about 20+ riders in the peloton and they hoover up all the points at the end?

Sam won't make it to the finish in the same group as Sagan.

    Its good stuff.
The more non greens the better im sure for Sam. But at least those 4 will take the larger points from Sagan.

I don't think it's 100% confirmed, but there are strong indicators he is being paid to go to the Giro. Came up with excuses that it was starting near slovakia - which it was, but isn't now!

How many points for the green jersey are up for grabs at the end line? Or is the same for every stage?

Even Sam's leadout man beating Sagan in the sprint. I love this Morkov guy!

They look good for green now that Alaphilippe is out of GC.

Looks like Morkov will be Sam's lead out. Deqlercq a super-domestique and Styber also also helping out. Kasper Asgreen is also be there to help.
Maybe Asgreen could even win this today.

Who's the other lad in there helping Sam then?
    Cavagna?

I see he replaced Stybar now!
