Should be obvious to anyone it's not about health and never was. I think many will realise this further down the line, but as always it will be too late by then (as of course the title of the thread alludes to).
The idea that people can be convinced the government care so much about people's health - I am so disappointed in people that they can't even see something that obvious.0 -

I know you are associating covid repressions with the kind of oppressive social score system currently used in China and this is pertinent of course, but the kind of repression and tyrrany we are experiencing now in the west, mask wearing , social distancing etc was never experienced by normal everyday soviet citizens. In fact nowadays many older people who remember those times, pine inconsolably for the life they once had.
The system was forceably dismantled without the consent of 70% of the population.
Uncle Joe Stalin was a formidable character but far removed from the average joe. We should remember too that without his input we might well all be speaking German today and living under the reich.
In soviet society for the first time in human history, ´´everyone´´ had equal access to education from kindergarten to Laminosov university (without social segregation as in Ireland with its VECs at one side of town and religious pay as you go private schools at the other), hence their high educational achievement and almost total literacy from early on. Healthcare too was prioritised even after the ravages of WWII with average people eventualy complaining about too many doctor home visits, too many checks after giving birth for instance. A decent living wage and a comfortable apartment was available to everyone at the time Angela McCourt was scavenging for bits of stray coal on the back streets of Limerick , no class divisions ..the professor´s children played with the children of the factory worker (and often marriages between these hitherto different classes were the natural result, as these boys and girls grew up in the same apartments together and went to the same schools offering the exact same high level programmes.
Of course not everyone was happy with the system and there were some serious abuses, but it wasn´t as bad as portrayed in the propaganda we were subjected to in the west and Ireland. Michael Parenti asks where were all those supposed gulag prisoners at the collapse of the USSR? They never materialised actually. There should have been thousands of them. The work of many of the so called defectors including Solzhenitsyn has been questioned and in part discredited in recent times. Such people were feted in the west of course and the more extreme and brilliant their portrayal of soviet life the more important and famous they became. My granny prayed every night for the conversion of Russia without realising that in reality the gospel values were much more alive in Smolensk than in Sligo. Actually religious practice was possible too in soviet society. If you were an ambitious party member, baptising your children might have raised a few eyebrows alright, but for the masses it wasn´t a big deal if you practised.
In the west much of our social progress and increasingly decent living standards were only grudgingly permitted by our fascist overlords because of the fact that there existed a real and dangerously subversive alternative system where ´´fairness´´ was of the essence. Ispravedlivost is the word they use in Russian, Justicia does it in Spanish, FAIRNESS would be the english equivalent.0 -

It's going to be a global discussion form. Suggestions and ideas and possible agreements will be put forward, countries can decide to adhere to some, if they please, or not.
What do countries do about the effects of this pandemic, future pandemics. Then there will be the usual stuff about the climate/environment, and generic economic ideas about the future. You know, ideas to basically improve the world.
