Like the title says. It's a dense soil, high in humus, probably lower in sand than it should oughta. There are go leor earthworms, but also some little knackers that I think might be eating my roots.

    A) what are they?

    B) do I need to get rid of them?

    C) how do I get rid of them?

Vine weevils have small white grubs that curl into a 'comma' shape. Yes they eat roots. You need to get rid of them quite ruthlessly - if they are in pot plants, which is most usual, dispose of the compost into your rubbish bin after sterilising it with something like jeyes fluid, otherwise you will probably need some sort of insecticide, not sure which.
