    Senior Football championship semi finals

    Nire vs Ballinacourty

    Rathgormack vs Gaultier

In Hurling Ballygunner will have to beat 2 of Ballyea vs Inagh-Kilnamona (Clare) and Thurles Sarsfields vs Loughmore-Castleiney (Tipperary) to make a Munster final

Gary O'Keeffe and Gavin Whelan are under 20 managers

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,293 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Must of been one hell of a good interview from Gary O Keeffe if it beat that all-star team but best of luck to him in the job. Its a very hard grade to be successful in

Kevin Moran retired, thanks for all the service. Great servent to Waterford Hurling

The legs just gave up on Kevin Moran in the last year or two but he was a serious player for us. 2 all stars, 2 munster county medals, 2 leagues, 3 club counties and 2 munster clubs. At least one Fitzgibbon medal as well. Can look back on his inter County career with pride.

I hate cliches but Kevin Moran definitely owes his county nothing.

Best of luck to Kevin Moran, and thanks for the memories - tremendous servant who gave his all and when on form had ability to dominate games. Did not hear about Shane Fives retirement but if he is gone but if he is, the best of luck to him also and again heartfelt thanks- another great servant, who seldom got the recognition he truly deserved

First time I remember seeing Moran was in a Munster minor game in Thurles v Limerick, think it may have been around 05, and thinking we have a star on our hands here. he was outstanding. and physically he looked ready for senior intercounty hurling. A brilliant competitor and a fabulous hurler.

Was Moran the only Deise player to play in 3 AI finals (excluding replays)? Great servant and qualified for Galway too under the parentage rule!

There are a few who played in 57, 59 and 63 and also played a replay in 59.

Does this mean that for the 1st time since 2002 we're starting a championship with none of the panel holding a Munster medal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,432 ✭✭✭MfMan

Had forgotten the 57 final. I presume no-one played in the three above and also in 1948?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭Cake Man

You'd be correct, nobody on the current panel still around since the last Munster win (2010 - which IMO has been way too long since we last won it). Looking back on that team, to be fair it was an aging side with only a young Brian O'Halloran that could've potentially been still involved today (was always a little disappointed he never really kicked on as he had huge potential but had his fair share of injuries too it has to be said).

That's right MfMan, his father is indeed a Galway man! I would have hurled with Moran for a period underage and he was always (both height wise and ability wise) head and shoulders above everyone else. You knew with him on your side you were always confident of winning every game. I recall around that time he had trials with Newcastle over in England, being a handy soccer player too but decided to go with the hurling (and teaching).

Thanks to Moran for all the great memories, many a day he pulled us into a game. None more so than the unbelievable point off the hurley, on the sideline under the stand in Thurles against KK in a 2013 qualifier to level the game in injury time. Unfortunately we were beaten in extra time but just one example.

as oppossed to what other teams we might play in munster?? start witha home game, against a tipp team we are finally on top of , ok away to limerick second week will be our hardest game but best time to get them is second round, makes sure we blow the cobwebs the first game, and not enough time to accrue injuries so we know where we are, then our third game in a row is at home again, we have a weeks break at the best time possible , and out last game against a clare team who have played 4 games in a row ,other than not having limerick at home can;t see how we could get a better draw

Tom Cunningham, Austin Flymm, John Barron, Martin Óg Morrissey, Seamus Power, Mick FLannelly, Tom Cheasty, Larry Guinan, Frankie Walsh all involved in 1957, 1959 and 1963 I think. If you take in replayed final in 59, they played in four finals. I am sure some would also be minors in 1948.

Very sad news yesterday. Pat Hunt gave huge service to his club & indeed his county. A great GAA man & an absolute gentleman. He’ll be greatly missed. RIP

JJ Kavanagh and Sons Intermediate Football Championship Final

    Full time

    Dungarvan : 1-6(9)

    Portlaw: 1-8(11)

  • Registered Users Posts: 340 ✭✭tommylad1212

Shock there with dungarvan losing , all but a senior team , winning the inter last year

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,293 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Ballygunner will face Ballyea who won the Clare final today in the Munster Senior QF. Winners will face Thurles Sarsfields or Loughmore-Castleieny (which goes to a replay) in the semi finals

Intermediate Champions Dunhill will face Smith O'Brien's of Clare

Junior Champions Brickey Rangers will face Ogonelloe of Clare (no idea how to pronounce that name)

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭Cake Man

Good result for Ballyea considering they won it without Tony Kelly. Will he be back for the Ballygunner game? How have BG's preparations gone in the last few weeks since they won the county, have they played any challenge games since?

Still think it's ridiculous how late the intercounty club championship is being run off. Clare have been out of the senior championship since the 24th July and have only concluded their championship today (16 weeks later), Tipp out since 31 July and their county final won't be concluded until next weekend, Galway also out on 24th July and they won't have theirs wrapped up until late Nov/early Dec. You'd be sick being a club player by not getting regular games when the weather is at least somewhat decent at the back end of the summer and having to wait until the cold, rain and bogs of pitches in Oct/Nov/Dec.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,293 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

True and the Munster club finals are not taking place til the first weekend in January meaning the All Ireland series will not be taking place til maybe late January/February. some players might not even line out for there counties in the Leagues

I suppose that’s 16 weekends to run off a hurling & football championship. Was there a set date for the start of the Clare championship? That’s generally what players look for to have dates to plan around, rather than a few weeks after the hurlers or footballers are knocked out. When clubs are asked to play so many weeks in a row people complain also, so it can be difficult for fixture makers in fairness.
