Anyone else hear post clearance? I was contacted for clearance a while ago, does anyone know how long it takes and if we will be started remotely due to the current situation?

Departments were given deadlines for getting online induction courses ready by DPER.
Most are now good to go (there are a few laggards, as always).
The intention is these induction courses will be used by all grades, they are not strictly AO related.

For anyone that has been contacted about obtaining clearance and being under consideration for a post, how were you contacted? By phone or email or was it a notification to your PAS message board?

Also, in terms of verifying your qualifications, how is this being done? I know in the past for a competition I was successful in that PAS were running, I was able to bring in my qualifications in-person for them to take a copy of because I didn’t want to risk them in the post or risk them being damaged while PAS had them, like a cup of tea or coffee spilled on them, but obviously now it’s remote working as much as possible now, and for the foreseeable, so calling in in-person isn’t looking like an option.

Has anyone from the Health stream been contacted yet?

Has any one get any advice on researching their presentation topic? I've a question involving the health system and I haven't the first idea of how to research it! Is is best to go with scholarly articles on jStore for example? Or are newspaper publications ok? How much detail should I go into? Should the presentation be referenced?

From my experience on the previous batch, I went with a mix of scholarly articles (Google scholar) and newspaper articles. It’s important that you reference everything. They will ask on your approach to the research and on why you chose those references. My ppt had things in great detail, but my explanation was more succinct. They asked about any possible issues or concerns I saw on my proposals.
Also, make sure you are updated on what is happening in Ireland and the world.

Newspaper publications are fine. For health issues, have a look at the HSE and Department of Health's websites, you may find some materials there. You may also want to look at some white papers for medtech / pharmaceutical companies as well. Academic articles are fine for background or to give information, but they're unlikely to be very helpful for convincing your boss to do anything!

Some general advice that I found really helpful for mine- remember that you're a prospective AO who's presenting to senior management at least three grades above you. There is no prospect at all that you'd be entrusted to do so by yourself. Refer to yourself in the first person plural (i.e. "we suggest" etc) and if they follow up on that, say that this proposal was devised by you but signed off by your manager and Principal Officer.

Think of benefits of whatever you're proposing through the point of view of the state and in particular the civil service rather than for their own sake, or vague concepts like "the population." For instance, nobody is going to say that having more hospitals for their own sake is a bad idea, but it's far easier to persuade someone to act on it if you can say that this will result in a healthier population, which means less absenteeism from the workplace, better preparation for epidemics or other health emergencies, and reduced litigation against the state (etc).

The main opposition you'll encounter to pretty much any practical proposal is its cost and you're better off pre-empting that rather than having them follow up. You'll need to prove that whatever you're proposing is so beneficial that inherently is worth the implementation cost (this is a difficult line to take), or that the benefits will save money in the long run and so are worth the start-up cost (e.g. better to pay to build a new hospital now, rather than have the health service overrun in an emergency and keeping a huge part of the population out of work, thus damaging the economy).

Other than that, try to generally think of pros and cons. Remember that vague concepts don't work well in the civil service; it works best when policies are clear and have discernable actions and timelines (e.g. "improve the health service" vs "build 10 new hospitals across the state by 2025"). The best of luck with it! :)

I have mine tomorrow, super nervous.
Are the questions they ask after the presentation very tough? Will they dig a lot into your extra findings? My issue is remembering all the stats and the numerous publications I went through to do the research. Do they also ask about current policies/frameworks in place already that relate to the suggestions I make?

I found the questions fair and directly related to what you presented. They will delve a little into why you came to your conclusion or recommendations and question if you have considered the implications of that and what affect it may have in relation to rights etc, so you must be robust in your findings and support your recommendations based on what you have discovered in your research. Your sources or references will be questioned, as in why you chose those as a resource etc

They do ask you about policies and what your understanding is. I would suggest you read up on governmental policies and perhaps how they are made under the Irish system. But don’t go over board, a good synopses of policy making etc will stand to you. It’s a long interview but does go by quickly.

This is absolutely super advice for anybody to bear in mind.

Any updates on where they are at clearance?

  • Registered Users Posts: 30 Maelenn

If anyone wants to, I've contacted this email (clearance at publicjobs.ie ) last week and asked them about which OOM they had contacted already. They were quite nice and answered in one day. If someone contacts them, please let us all know their answer.

ps: can't seem to be able to post the email with the correct format

got contacted for health question form in clearance -- PAS couldn't tell me if it starts remote or not, does anyone know if they will want us in the office despite restrictions?

asking just because i am not from dublin and i can imagine trying to find a place right now is a nightmare

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 Htwd2020

Just wondering how long the clearance process took for anyone on the Industrial and Employee Relations stream. I know they have received all the required documents, references etc and they have received the Garda Vetting back.

You won't know until you speak with your new department's HR. Outline your situation to them when they do get in touch. You will have to go in on your first day anyway to get a laptop etc. Attendance in the office will very much depend on the section you are assigned to, although majority are working from home.

Travelling to Dublin during level 5 restrictions just to collect a laptop seems a bit strange, surely they could post it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭MrsBean

I don't know how they're doing things for people outside Dublin. I'm speaking from my own experience. It's not just collecting a laptop, there's a whole onboarding process that HR have to go through.

Edit: there's probably an IT security related reason for having to get your laptop set up on the department's network

Ahh very good! Thanks a mil for the info, will be interesting to see how it goes for those of us outside Dublin

For anybody on the Business / Finance stream: they’ve reached out as far as OOM 3.

I do not. Just emailed PAS.

That won’t be done until after people have gone through clearance

Really struggling with my presentation, never really had to do one in a professional scenario before! If anyone has a PPT or word file from a previous AO campaign and wouldn't mind pm'ing it, I'd be very appreciative!!

6 weeks on from the creation of the panel and they’ve only reached number 3 on the OOM on one of the panels?! That doesn’t even necessarily mean that they’ve contacted 3 people from that panel because people on the specialist stream panels can also be on the general stream panel and they had reached 3 on the general stream panel last Friday.

Once they started moving on the panels I expected them to make good progress in getting through the panels, seen as there was such a gap from when they stopped contacting people on the 2019 panels in late November/early December and how also according to that thread they moved through 25 people in about 3 weeks.

It’s hardly slow because they were organising more interviews, would it be? That’s surely a separate team working on that? Or maybe it’s because of all the competitions they’re running and organising placements from panels and clearance for.

    This.

Seems to be the standard process for a lot of grades at the moment. If you're lucky enough to be assigned to a Department that provides staff with laptops of course!

Does anyone have an example of a presentation? Or even specific pointers about what to include?? I've written out a few pages but it reads like a bad college essay : (

Take a look at websites such as slideshare . Net
You will find a large variety of presentations on that. Good luck!

Does anyone know what weighting is given to presentation versus interview?
