Not a bad number 1 in fairness- dying to see the stats and the albums that didn’t make the top 50- well done Reberetta- a mammoth task exquisitely executed

Yes, well done Reberreta. Fantastic stuff.

Tbf Funeral (and The Suburbs, for that matter) is a concept album. Lyrical similarity exists because the songs are meant to revolve around a unifying theme - otherwise wouldn't be much of a concept album!

I'm not solely talking about those albums, I mean in general I find their albums as a whole meh, with a couple of gems.

"... the Kids..." - Win Butler, The Suburbs.
Ah well, your loss! :p Surprised they evoke such a visceral reaction in anyone though, I'd have thought the worst thing anyone could say about Beach House was that they found them a bit dull (they'd be wrong, obviously! :pac: )
As I said, it's so irrational and OTT and I am well aware of it. I have no idea what triggered it.

The funny thing is that in theory, I should love Beach House, but for some reason they have just gotten under my skin. It's actually bizarre!

Only so many Beatles albums could have got through- I’m assuming most didn’t nominate multiple albums from the same band?
Wish you were here is not DSOTM- it’s a great album but doesn’t deserve top 50 status- unless of course we can ask for a recount for the Duran Duran nomination? :D

I had Ziggy Stardust but replaced him with Talking Heads before clicking send -so no Bowie in the list? He’s some great albums but are they all time classics that could reach the top 50? A lot of competition for those places and I’m not sure now if I were asked for an 11-20 list would I include him

Here's my list, delighted with Arcade Fire in third place

    1. Arcade Fire - Funeral (Such a unique sound with many instruments, Wake Up is incredibly powerful)

    2. The Killers - Hot Fuss (An album full of amazing synth pop songs)

    3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way (I love every song on this album. It has frenetic songs like Can't Stop and By The Way mixed with chill songs like Dosed and The Zephyr Song, it's got everything)

    4. The Strokes - Is This It (Last Night, Someday, Hard to Explain...killer singles)

    5. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (Such a happy album, it always cheers me up)

    6. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, That's what I'm not (Instantly fell in love with this band and bought the album on release day when my friends had never heard of them - hipster alert! It has some very clever lyrics and a raw sound, a million miles from their latest overindulgent album)

    7. The White Stripes - Elephant (Everyone knows Seven Nation Army but there are so many great album track that most won't know like Hypnotize, Ball and Biscuit, and Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine)

    8. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (I don't take drugs but I'd imagine this album was created to take vast quantities of drugs to. It still sounds great sober)

    9. Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak (I love how this band used to sound and sing, they've changed a lot.)

    10. Misfits - Static Age (One of the best punk albums ever)

many of the songs written for Nevermind were about Cobain's dysfunctional relationship with Bikini Kill's Tobi Vail.

I heard that she was responsible for the 'smells like teen spirit' quote but never knew a lot of the Nevermind songs were about her. I saw Bikini Kill when they played an underage gig in Dublin during the 90s. My ears were bleeding afterwards.

Only two of my picks (from what I can see) featured in the list, but then I found it very difficult to cut it down to ten, so just went with my gut.

Surprised that Hounds Of Love wasn't high on the list, let alone not figuring at all (or maybe I missed it).

Now I shall reveal my nominations which I gave clues for last night... in order from Number 1 to Number 10 - slightly rearranged.

I didn't do too bad guessing...blue nile, electronic, yes, suzanne vega, kate bush and u2? Love boy by U2 a forgotten gem.

Some of the chart peaks, specifically Irish ones, were difficult to find so there might be some inaccuracies.
Should be able to breeze through this countdown in one day as all the hard work is done!

    Here are mine

    01 Fleetwood Mac - Tusk (1979)
A double LP of 20 tracks, all killer.

02 Dexys Midnight Runners - Don't Stand Me Down (1985)
    Neglected masterpiece of introspective navel-gazing.

03 Prince - Sign Of The Times (1987)
Another double, utter perfection from start to finish.

04 Style Council - Our Favourite Shop (1985)
Love The Jam and Weller solo but this is the peak.

05 ABC - The Lexicon Of Love (1982)
Perfectly programmed and performed synth pop. My first LP.

    06 Japan - Tin Drum (1981)
They peak with their final album and the split. Atmospheric.

07 Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire De Melody Nelson (1971)
    28 minutes of bliss.

    08 Pet Shop Boys - Behaviour (1990)
Autumnal, mature & world-weary. Will take you ages to get into but so worth it.

    09 Primal Scream - Screamadelica (1991)
The ultimate party album and soundtrack to so many lost nights.

    10 Various - Now That's What I Call Music 3 (1984)
The greatest pop compilation of them all.

    15 more
    My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything (1988)
    The Cure - Disintegration (1989)
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92 (1992)

Simple Minds - New Gold Dream (1982)

If I'd had to add a second album Break The Cycle would definitely have been in the mix

I do found it amazing that David Bowie did not feature at all in the Top 50, with all the albums that he put out. Other surprising omissions: Talking Heads, Sade (Diamond Life album), Simply Red, Simple Minds, no solo albums by any of The Eagles, Depeche Mode, Genesis, Phil Collins and Kate Bush.

Bowie big surprise. Talking Heads - yeah, probably Remain In Light for me. Simply Red have solid albums IMHO but nothing outstanding. Depeche Mode's Violator a surprise omission although I prefer Black Celebration. I like both eras of Genesis but would have been surprised if they made it. Phil Collins solo - you could make a case for any of the first five but Face Value and No Jacket Required are great. Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love is streets ahead of any of her others IMHO.

If 10 people each had a Bowie album in their list, there’s a very good chance he still wouldn’t have featured
I’d pick either Hero’s or Ziggy Stardust- I see Low and Let’s Dance mentioned in this thread also - just not sure we’d get agreement - it’s probably a good idea for a tournament thread in itself- best Bowie album ever

Some of those artists/albums above would definately feature in a best of 80s list

Two from my list (that were never getting anywhere near this list, in fairness) were Julianna Barwick - The Magic Tree and Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me. I had Pod instead of Last Splash and would gone for The Hot Rock over The Woods for Sleater-Kinney. The Woods is the one album I never got into of theirs, but I hear people rave about it, so I'm going to give it another shot.

Have One On Me would have been a lock for my Top 10. Don't need another 10/20 years to know that's not an all time classic. The Woods would have had a good chance too. Nepenthe would be my Julianna Barwick album in contention. Would struggle to choose between To Bring You My Love and Let England Shake.

Nail on head there, Bowie's problem is having too many good albums!

No love for Pulp? Different Class is, well... a different class. I thought The Prodigy might get in too

    No Cure
    No Neil Young
    No Van Morrison

And I agree about Hot Fuss, thought that would do well

Brilliantly run Reb, so much work! Thanks for doing it, you've soundtracked my next few car journeys! :)

And a very short list of Irish albums

Jimmy mccarthy... the song of the singing horseman6
    The whipping boy...heartworm
The horslips...happy to meet-sorry to part
A house... on our big fat merry go round

Thanks Reberetta for all the hard work, loads off new album ideas to listen to over the next while from everyone. Very informative and enjoyable :)

It took a while to get there, but it was certainly worth the wait. Thanks for all the hard work you put into this Reb, and the reveal itself was quality.

For the record, here's my list:

1 - Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads
    2 - The Bends - Radiohead
    3 - Funeral - Arcade Fire
    4 - Graceland - Paul Simon
    5 - Exile on Coldharbour Lane - Alabama 3
6 - Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
    7 - Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
    8 - It's a Shame About Ray - Lemonheads
    9 - The Joshua Tree - U2
10 - Exile in Guyville - Liz Phair

5 made the top 50, so I'm pretty happy, and a bit surprised about that.

Vitalic is a French electro house and techno DJ.

If you like Boards of Canada, The Knife, Chris Clark, Jon Hopkins or even Crystal Castles you can find a thread in there that isn't too daunting or "hard".

    ---

Yeah, SFA are Super Furry Animals. Few bands in my life have had such a resounding effect on me. That I only plumped for Radiator was more down to the rule of "one per band" than it being so far ahead of others. I could have easily picked Guerilla (which has my favourite SFA song [and one of my favourite songs of all time "Northern Lites" on it]), Phantom Power or Fuzzy Logic and I would have been happy with the choice.

You lost me at electro house there. Just not for me. I agree that Norther Lites is a cracking tune. Not much else from the album, except maybe Do or Die really grabbed me though. Haven't listened too it in ages. It's probably my age, but I tend to be a bit of a traditionalist. I like guitars, melodies, harmonies, that kind of thing. Rap, house, electronic music etc just leaves me cold. Couldn't listen to it. On the list, I have actually bought 2 of the top 4, Funeral and Stone Roses. Wouldn't have either among my favourites though.

Have only recently got Nepenthe, but love it, but The Magic Place (and Florine) were the first bits of music of hers that I heard.

Toss up between Rid of Me and Let England Shake for me. Let England Shake would probably shade it, just because Rid of Me will always remind me of being a teenager, the amount of times I had it on repeat.

I’ll burn my “in concert” Dave Fanning tapes from the 80s so

    Share them with this guy if you can, and he'll share the love;

    https://www.facebook.com/fanningsessions
I have years of "Beat Box" and 2TV on VHS as well somewhere!
Again, please consider sharing them - this guy would love to get his hands on them; https://twitter.com/KillianM2
I heard that she was responsible for the 'smells like teen spirit' quote
I thought that came from a deodorant advert, if my memories of the Classic Albums documentary on Nevermind is reliable. Great show, but I can't get over how Krist looks like a Microsoft director these days in chinos and all.

I was shocked that Fat of the Land wasn't in the Top 20.

That's him followed. I'll try root them out.
