That's a fine winner, weirdly I loved it when it came out first, then fell out love with it, and then re listening to it in the last year, really got into it again... a bit like how family/here can be.;)

Two bands in the top 50 I've never heard of and from the nominations people are putting up countless more!

I had Ziggy Stardust but replaced him with Talking Heads before clicking send -so no Bowie in the list? He’s some great albums but are they all time classics that could reach the top 50? Here's my list, delighted with Arcade Fire in third place


1. Arcade Fire - Funeral (Such a unique sound with many instruments, Wake Up is incredibly powerful)

2. The Killers - Hot Fuss (An album full of amazing synth pop songs)

3. Red Hot Chili Peppers - By The Way (I love every song on this album. It has frenetic songs like Can't Stop and By The Way mixed with chill songs like Dosed and The Zephyr Song, it's got everything)

4. The Strokes - Is This It (Last Night, Someday, Hard to Explain...killer singles)

5. Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend (Such a happy album, it always cheers me up)

6. Arctic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, That's what I'm not (Instantly fell in love with this band and bought the album on release day when my friends had never heard of them - hipster alert! It has some very clever lyrics and a raw sound, a million miles from their latest overindulgent album)

7. The White Stripes - Elephant (Everyone knows Seven Nation Army but there are so many great album track that most won't know like Hypnotize, Ball and Biscuit, and Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine)

8. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (I don't take drugs but I'd imagine this album was created to take vast quantities of drugs to. It still sounds great sober)

9. Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak (I love how this band used to sound and sing, they've changed a lot.)

10. Misfits - Static Age (One of the best punk albums ever)

many of the songs written for Nevermind were about Cobain's dysfunctional relationship with Bikini Kill's Tobi Vail.

I heard that she was responsible for the 'smells like teen spirit' quote but never knew a lot of the Nevermind songs were about her. I saw Bikini Kill when they played an underage gig in Dublin during the 90s. My ears were bleeding afterwards.

Only two of my picks (from what I can see) featured in the list, but then I found it very difficult to cut it down to ten, so just went with my gut.



Surprised that Hounds Of Love wasn't high on the list, let alone not figuring at all (or maybe I missed it).

If I'd had to add a second album Break The Cycle would definitely have been in the mix

I do found it amazing that David Bowie did not feature at all in the Top 50, with all the albums that he put out. Other surprising omissions: Talking Heads, Sade (Diamond Life album), Simply Red, Simple Minds, no solo albums by any of The Eagles, Depeche Mode, Genesis, Phil Collins and Kate Bush.

Bowie big surprise. Talking Heads - yeah, probably Remain In Light for me. Simply Red have solid albums IMHO but nothing outstanding. Depeche Mode's Violator a surprise omission although I prefer Black Celebration. I like both eras of Genesis but would have been surprised if they made it. Phil Collins solo - you could make a case for any of the first five but Face Value and No Jacket Required are great. Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love is streets ahead of any of her others IMHO.

If 10 people each had a Bowie album in their list, there’s a very good chance he still wouldn’t have featured
I’d pick either Hero’s or Ziggy Stardust- I see Low and Let’s Dance mentioned in this thread also - just not sure we’d get agreement - it’s probably a good idea for a tournament thread in itself- best Bowie album ever

Two from my list (that were never getting anywhere near this list, in fairness) were Julianna Barwick - The Magic Tree and Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me. I had Pod instead of Last Splash and would gone for The Hot Rock over The Woods for Sleater-Kinney. The Woods is the one album I never got into of theirs, but I hear people rave about it, so I'm going to give it another shot.

Have One On Me would have been a lock for my Top 10. Don't need another 10/20 years to know that's not an all time classic. The Woods would have had a good chance too. Nepenthe would be my Julianna Barwick album in contention. Would struggle to choose between To Bring You My Love and Let England Shake.
