    Hi guys,

Doing a DIY project on the front garden and am trying to figure out how much hard core and sand I'll require.

The garden is 8.5 meters × 6 meters and iv dug down exactly 75mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Iv posted a link below, I timbered it out to assist with my levels

What dept of hardcore are you going with?

    8.5m x 6m x 0.075m = 3.825 cubic metres

    3.8 cubic metres in tonnes of stone/sand x 1.6

= 6.12 tonnes(7 just in case its wet)

What way you split the sand/stone depends on the depth.

Thanks funster. Think I'll split it 4 tonnes of hardcore and 2 tonnes of sharp sand. Would wackering it down compress so that I'd need more do you think ?. I'm going to be doing the back in November so I'll probably be better getting the extra tonne of sand anyway.

I work with this, 1 ton is equal to 10 m2 if spread at a depth of 5cm(2inches). If area is above 50m2 then i add in half ton xtra. If doi g a patio 90-100 mm would be better. Slab 25-30mm sand 30mm, hard-core the rest.
    Hope this makes sense.

    So I've 50 m2 to 7.5cm

    50m2 to 5cm would be 5 tonnes
Then 50m2 by 2.5c. Would be 2.5 tonnes

Therefore 5 tonnes of hardcore + 3 tonnes of sharp sand would be required?

Yes. What are you putting on top of sand, if pebbles, then you need blinding dust not sand.
